Henri Report 10 Aug 2017 19:39

I need to begin my family search with a known address but only 1911 census is available on this sight. I need census around 1939 to 1952. Any suggestions please.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 10 Aug 2017 20:01

Welcome to GR, Henri.

1911 is the last British census open to the public as there is a 100 year closure rule.
The closest equivalent for England & Wales is the 1939 Register - compiled as at 29 Sep 1939 - available on Findmypast.

That lists all people born before 1916 & known to have died before 1992 who hadn't already been called up. Those born 1916-1939 are listed, but their names will have been redacted if no matching death registration has yet been found.

Other than that, various electoral roles are available on line. They are mainly on Ancestry. Those listed would have had to be eligible to vote due to their nationality & aged 21 and over.

If you don't wish to take out a subscription to FMP or Ancestry, GR members who do have those subs are happy to help out.

Both sites are usually available for free at U.K. Public Libraries.

I agree with Detective- also searching the newspaper archives using an address can be helpful in finding occupants.

If you are able to share the address we can take a look for you.

As it's a rural area, you might need to contact the nearest Archive or Library with a local studies section for Electoral Roll entries. If you can't visit in person, they will probably change a look up fee.
No Roll was taken 1939-1945. Only eligible voters 21 & over will be listed.

Much appreciated. There is a name there I do not recognize. Will have to ask my relatives living in the area. Not an easy task as all names on the census are deceased except for the unknown SEWELL. Thanks DetEcTive

If his home was in Kingston-upon-Hull which I believe is on the coast, could Leslie have been evacuated to Selby?

In that case, he would be unrelated to the Hall family
