Just to add to ArgyllGran's post about the 1855 birth registration for Alexander Dow, 1855 was the first year of statutory registration in Scotland and birth registrations contain more information than later registrations.

From the Scotlandspeople website

1855 register entries
In 1855, the first year of statutory civil registration, the following additional information was recorded:

Other children and whether they were living or deceased
Ages of both parents
Birthplaces of both parents
Parents’ usual residence
Baptismal name (if different).

Assuming the tree is correct re Alexander senior's birthplace, this will be his birth record, from Scotlands People:

DOW
ALEXANDER
M
1855
564/1 343
Greenock New or Middle

If you register with Scotlands People website, and buy some credits, you can view and print the image of the original document for 6 credits (£1.50).
It will tell you his parents' names, his father's occupation, and the date and place of his parents' marriage.

Alexander's marriage cert to Mary Thomas will tell you his father's name, which you can compare with the birth cert to ensure he's the same person.

Hi Mary,
Having Trouble understanding the information you have provided here
im getting a Annie Dow (assumed Violets Mother) was born 1900 in Cardiff
and died in 1938.

Annies parents Were
father Alexander Dow born 1855 Greenock Scotland - died 1942
mother was Mary Thomas who died in 1905

Alexander later married Elizabeth Jane Griffiths in 1908

i am unsure as to the information:
""1901 Annie with mum Mary and brother Alexander and 1911 with step mum Elizabeth Dow,dad Alexander is a mariner away at sea."" other than Alexanders profession.

Also getting My great 3x Great Grandfather was 45 and his wife 28 when my 2x Great Grand mother was born! i have no way to confirm or deny this information. however the dates and names seem to match, therefore giving me at least something to go from.

I will pencil in the above information and try to disprove it. you have all given me a boost over my first wall on my family tree, thank you all so much!

Thanks, Jake

P.s
If the information above is correct and i have Scottish roots I shell keep that information on the low low, as my Scottish partner is looking for every reason to get me in a kilt for our wedding!

thanks again jake!
