Yes, I know EJ's baptism gives the name Jemima - it was the records of Elizabeth Swinburne I really meant. Anything to prove she was the same Elizabeth.

Chris Ho, Have been unable to find when the Laffers and Charles Swinburne came to Australia.
James Laffer and his wife Emma died in South Australia.
Thanks very much for the info.
I am pretty sure that Elizabeth Laffer and Charles Swinburne married somewhere here in Australia

ArgyllGran,
I see what you mean now. I found some info on Cornwall OPC like baptisms but it is hard to prove that Elizabeth J is the right one. Thank you for your help.

Hi Patricia

Sorry I'm so late to the party :-)

Not sure if I've missed this in all the posts but here is James Laffer and family's arrival in South Australia:
LAFFER James, Emma RICHARDS, Helen, Eliz, Mary, Philip Fdk, Jas, Hy B arrived in SA 1840-04-16 aboard Morley from London 1839-12-08 via Plymouth

See http://www.familyhistorysa.org/shipping/passengerlists.html

The same site lists 2 children born to this couple
LAFFER James, Emma RICHARDS, parents of child born 1843-02-04 named Albert Ogilvie at Nth Adelaide
LAFFER James, Emma RICHARDS, parents of child born 1845-01-01 named John White at Fourth Ck

Have to go out for a bit, back later...

If he came directly to WA he will be hard to find I'm afraid. Perth DPS has lists of early shipping but an't see him on the lists included c1850 (since the newspaper clipping places him in Bunbury by 1851). See http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/shipping/mig-wa.htm

Interestngly there is this marriage in SA
1851
8/249
HORGAN John
LAFFER Elizabeth
Adelaide

Elizabeth's death notice in case you hadn't found it

I'm starting to think perhaps they didn't officially marry,. It happened a fair bit back then. It was very difficult for a woman to get a divorce.

Their children in Victoria just in case:
Chas Fredk 1859 - Richmond, d. 1935 - Gisborne
Emma c1864 - Kyneton, d. 1869 aged 5
James c1864 - Kyneton, d. 1867 aged 3
Sarah Maria 1865 - Kyneton
Ellen 1867 - Kyneton
James 1867 - Kyneton (twin of Ellen)
Henry 1873 - Kyneton, d. 1873 aged 7 [?months]
Wm 1873 - Kyneton (twin of Henry), d. 1873 aged 9 [?months]

FYI daughter Helen LAFFER who is listed here died in 1853.

Albert Olgilvie LAFFER also had several children who died young (at least 5!)

This is son of Jas & Emma Laffer's eldest son Frederick (with a photo!)
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/58526133

The James LAFFER who died in 1893 was the son, not the father - a sad end:
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/208452698

James snr had died in 1889 aged 90!
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/47053888

Emma and James are buried at St Mary's - http://www.australiancemeteries.com.au/sa/mitcham/stmarysdata.htm

Several family members are buried at Mitcham Cemetery inSA:
