Just looking into my ancestor.

In 1861 census occupation is flyman
In 1871 census occupation is coachman servant

Would flyman be to do with a carriage?

Is there any way I could find out who he worked for?

Thank you

Fly Coachman / Flyman
Fly Proprietor/Master 1) Drove a "fly" a one horse two wheeled light carriage 2) Flyman also a term for a theatre stage hand 3) A Fly Proprietor/Master employed fly drivers for hire and usually owned the flys.

TBH ...................

I doubt that you will be able to find out!

A flyman seems to have usually driven carriages that were for hire................. rather like taxis today.

Coachman Servant could imply that he was a servant for someone, but I went back 2 pages in that census, and he doesn't seem to be living in the mews belonging to a "big" house. So impossible to tell who he worked for.
