I was just looking at Daniel Smith's daughters wedding record on the Scottish People's website and when she married Mr Arbuckle in 1937 it lists Daniel Smith as father deceased (boiler maker)......not sure when or where though.

For that matter (although we know there are lots of mistakes in the 1939 register) here's no birth of a Mary Frances Fleming in Aug 1893, either, as stated in 1939 .

No, I can't see a birth or marriage for him either.

Nor can I see the birth of the child Robert H, according to 1939 Register born 19 Sept 1938.

EDIT:
Oh, I see Laird says they married in Scotland.

So was Mary Frances also in Scotland for a while?

Maybe these deaths are worth considering ?? No age given for the second one.

Thanks for checking ArgyllGran, it's a proper mystery isn't it? Can only assume some clues will come to light when the 1921 census is released :-)

What on earth happened to Daniel Smith....

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 24 May 2018 17:09

Have trawled through all the Daniel and D Smiths who died in WW1, on the CWGC website - and none of them is your Daniel.

It's a very common name. If he and Mary separated, and he moved away, he could have lived and died anywhere.
In England and Wales, there were six Daniel Smiths with no middle name born in 1889, so pretty much impossible to tell if any death is "your" Daniel or not.

Also ArgyllGran you can see from the 1939 census (it was free a couple of weeks ago on ancestry) that Mary Frances Fleming (Nelson) was born 1893 August 17th.....i'm inclined to believe that is correct.

See- https://imgur.com/a/h1GSB0Y

We already established she was born in County Cork, Ireland.

Do you know they only had the one child,, or could the Daniel F Smith born 1919 and died in 1920 in Newport Monmouthshire have been there son. This would suggest he was still alive in 1918/19. Perhaps someone with more access to records could find his mothers name.

From FreeBMD:

Births Mar 1919
Smith Daniel F (mms Taylor) Newport M. 11a 416

Seems like a different Daniel Smith as mothers maiden name Taylor. Thanks for checking ArgyllGran :-)
