I think Frederick John was a bit of a lad!!

He seems to have several address with different ladies from 1918 to 1939

who is Emily Louisa Mardon??

The Electoral Rolls for London have Frederick John living with Bertha from 1918 which I think is the first time that wives were added to the husband.

Then he is shown at TWO addresses in 4 Roll years (1920, 1921, 1922 and 1925), at one with Bertha in Poplar and in St Pancras with Emily Louisa Mardon, then he's only at one address with Emily Louisa

Frederick John Mardon 1920 Tower Hamlets Poplar 229 Davidson227

Frederick John Mardon 1920 Camden Saint Pancras 66

Frederick John Mardon 1921 Tower Hamlets Poplar 229 Covtd

Frederick John Mardon 1921 Camden St Pancras 65 Block

Frederick John Mardon 1922 Tower Hamlets Poplar 229 Manchester
Road

Frederick John Mardon 1922 Camden St Pancras 66 Block

Frederick John Mardon 1925 Tower Hamlets Poplar 229 Manchester Road-

Frederick John Mardon 1925 Camden St Pancras 65 Block

In 1923 he is only shown at the Camden St Pancras address with Emily Louisa and in 1924 he is shown only at the Poplar address wither Bertha

In 1928, he is on the Electoral Roll at 3 addresses!!

1. At 229 Manchester, with3 apparently unrelated people (this would be after Bertha's death)

2. At 65 Block Pancras with Emily Louisa

3. At 54 West City of Westminster with a Lilian Mardon

Then he seems to repeat somewhat the same pattern, but in 1933 he is living with Emily Louisa at 65 Blake, William George, St Pancras, Camden. With them is a Margery Joyce Mardon

In 1934 he is with Emily Louisa and Margery Joyce at 65 Block, AND with Martha Mary Wood in Finchley. From then until 1939 he is with Martha Mary.

It doesn't look as though your great grandfather had the greatest childhood, perhaps why he wouldn't talk about it!

Thanks SylviaInCanada.

Do you think there is any chance that there was more than one Frederick John Mardon living in London at these times?

I think there was more than one! In 1930 -on the electoral register- the Frederick John Mardon (born 1870) was living with Martha Mary Wood at 76 Finchley Park. Looks like he moves out for a while- and then returns.

Looks like Martha Mary Wood was Frederick's sister:

WOOD Martha Mary of 76 Finchley Park Finchley Middlesex widow died 20 June 1946 at St Columbus Hospital Swiss Cottage London NW£ Probate London 20 August to Samuel Henry Mardon accounts clerk.
