Any marriages would probably be guesswork as OPRs rarely give parents' names for marriages.

I still don't understand. You ask for marriages and deaths for the children and then when you are given a possible you say you already have it :-S :-S :-S

Sometimes you have to accept that there just are no records to be found from that period of time that would point definitely to a person being the person you are looking for.

Thank you Alviegal. Had I known of the previous threads, I wouldn't have looked twice at this lol.

Joysie4, I think it is a mistake only to research the male side especially when researching Scottish ancestors as the Scottish naming pattern can be a great help when searching for children of a marriage. Prior to statutory registration in Scotland, which began in 1855, it is very difficult to identify your ancestors. I have been researching my Scottish ancestors for 40 years and even with an unusual surname cannot identify with any certainty my ancestors prior to the mid 1750s. Sometimes we just have to accept facts and in the interest of having an accurate tree ignore the guesswork.

In your case, your William married in Edinburgh. In the interest of other researchers, can you tell us please what records show that he was born in Wigtownshire? There were no census records around at that time showing birthplace. Even if his marriage entry gave his abode as a parish in Wigtownshire that wouldn't necessarily mean he was born there. Which of his children are you descended from please? All his children and probably most of his grandchildren would have died prior to statutory registration so how can you be sure of the accuracy of your tree?

Having already contributed at length to the other threads, and having already pointed out that we can't know for sure which person married which, because of the lack of detailed info on parish records, I'm not getting into this again.

However, this is the William you mean, Joyce? He would be the 17th, then, not the 15th:-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Macdowall

"James Macdowall and William Macdowall were the sixteenth and seventeenth Lairds respectively.[3] During the seventeenth century, they were members of Parliament for Wigtownshire.[3] William and his wife, Grizel Beaton, had fourteen children. Their grandson, James Macdowall, became Lord Provost of Glasgow.[3]"

Following on from what RG said -

just because he was laird of Garthland, doesn't necessarily mean he was born there, or even lived there. There were absentee landlords in those days just as much as nowadays.

There's no record of his birth on SP. Old Parish Records are pretty patchy when you get that far back.
