Can anybody help. We have tried various avenues with no joy.

Father unknown. Any information will be gratefully received. Many thanks in advance, Susan. :-)

If no father is named on the birth certificate then it is unlikely you will find out who the father actually is.

So did your dad marry her mum ?

There is a marriage for June 1946 ?.

If so carol must have been born before then

As Carol is probably alive, tact is required

So this would be a half or step sister? Is she missing?
She may well still be alive and then we really have to think hard about finding her.

She would still have a birth certificate but it could be under any name her mother chose to use.
There is a possible birth for her using one of the surnames mentioned.

If she went by the name Watson she may have married using that name but may have used the name on her birth certificate.

Edit: Demobbing didn't happen over night so for many 1946 could still have been regarded as wartime

This doesn't make sense

Marriages Jun 1946 (>99%)
Osborne Dorothy F Watson Swindon 5a 137
Watson Alfred A L Osborne Swindon 5a 137

Are you saying the man married a woman who was pregnant with another man's child?

Did Alfred marry again?

Name: Alfred A L Watson

Was he widowed - or divorced?

It wouldn’t be the first time a man had married a woman carrying another man’s child, and wouldn’t be the last!

Susan

You refer to 'my father' Was Dorothy your mother? If she was, you should know her maiden name

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 5 Feb 2021 14:48

NOT ONE birth in Gloucester for anyone with MMN Osborne in OND 1946 or JFM 1947

If she was actually born after the marriage, one would expect her birth to be registered as Watson

Are you sure you have the right YEAR?

nameslessone Report 5 Feb 2021 14:55

There is a birth for a Carol A Osborne registered in 4th qtr. of 1946 (Bristol) which shouldn’t be dismissed.
It is possible that Carol Ann was registered with the right surname but the mother giving a false maiden name.

There is a Carol A Watson registered in Glos. City the same quarter - again a different maiden name.

All avenues should be explored.

nameslessone Report 5 Feb 2021 15:07

In that case it is the Watson birth in Glos.City that is the right one. Mother’s maiden name Wraight.

Edit: There are a number of trees on Ancestry for Dorothy. At leat one shows a number of children all of which seem to indicate they are all still living.

It is a shame the OP hasn’t come back again.
