Perhaps the birth certificate of Derek needs to be got to determin the fact........as Neal is certainly given for the mothers maiden name...also the the other birth of Meals

Wow Thankyou all so much I am researching this for Derek Steels born 1934 one of the two sons mentioned at Westwood He has his Mothers Birth certificate and his own that has Mothers Maiden name as Meals.
He had a sister who was taken and brought up by another family which seems to account for the Court proceedings.
Thanks to you all we may now be able to piece this together.

If Neal was given for both sons then some twist of truth was in the making..but for reasons unknown as May and Ernest were marreid then,,,,,,


a look at the newspaper brief of 1931 in full may reveal more but a sub or paid credits is needed,,,at findmypast.

On her Birth certificate Preston was given as Mothers Maiden name

It possibly will remain a mystery why she used a different maiden name for Derek and his brother,,,,

unless Ernest registered the births and got it wrong,?which is a possibilty for a man,
