You will be able to search and then have the ability to view the transcript and/or image at a cost and view what you have purchased online via Findmypast.

On the search you will have access to both simple and more advanced search fields for 1921 records - meaning you can search not only on names & locations but also on other household members, occupations and other biographical details captured in the census forms.

Results pages will show (with no charge) names, birth year & birthplace and parish & registration district in the census records. And a preview hover-over will also indicate the names of a couple of other members of the same household.

Does anyone know when the 1921 census will be available on other sites? I have just paid a years subscription to my heritage after they insisted the 1922 census would be available in their site after a " few weeks" I think they just wanted my money and the 1921 census was the only reason I signed up costing £229 which was reduced nearly 50% after 10 min call from them

I don't know the answer to your question but I'm fairly certain that FMP will want the exclusive rights for more than "a few weeks".

They have spent a fortune doing the work to digitise the records and will want to recoup some of their money before other sites are given access I would think.

Thanks that's exactly what thought, I just read that Ancestry can't confirm when they will have it, some reports say maybe 2023!

Thanks all, My Heritage have refunded my years subs and apologised as I was mislead regarding access to the 1921 census, I can't fault them for quickly correcting their mistake It's Find My Past only for 1921 census online, they have it exclusively for up to 3 years.

If you pay to look at the image it does not give you the address of the family. On the 1911 it was at the bottom of the page but in 1921 there is only the signature of the person who completed the form. To see the address you have to pay for the transcription also. An expensive business!

No. If you have the original image click the tab 'Extra Materials' bottom right of image and this gives access to the front of the page which has the address.

I've looked at several family members this morning. The standard of transcription is very poor. Nearly every record has errors. One family of five has eight spelling mistakes. Can't find some people, suspect spelling is to blame.

Thank you, Andy, I hadn't realised that. I agree about the standard of transcription. I've corrected several this morning. My great-grandfather had written very clearly Evelyn Maud for his wife and the transcription reads Edgar Maud.

I have just gone on FMP. Yes you have to pay £2.50 or £3.50 per item or you can pay a monthly or yearly subscription. There are three options. The Starter is £79.99 for a year, the Plus is £119.99 and the Premium is £159.99. I tried to look for my dad who was born in 1915 and couldn't find him so I looked for his mum. I found her and it told me who was on the record with her. The spellings of the names were awful. My dad's name was James - they have it down as Jar. I didn't pay anything so couldn't access the actual record. I hope this helps.

Access to 1921 images etc is NOT included in FMP subscriptions. The Pro subscription of £159.99 per annum allows a 10% discount on the cost of seeing the records…….but one still has to pay per view - either £2.25 or £3.15.

The search results and transcription will show you what the transcribers have made of the names and addresses as they have been written by the person completing the form. If you look at the original, James' name may have been written as Jas by the person completing the census form, or just written very badly. In which case there may well be room for a bad transcription. (But you would have to pay the £3.50 as well as the £2.50 you pay for the transcription)

The basic search (which is free, and which you can do without even logging on to FMP) can often be quite helpful.

You search with only name and YOB - but the list of search results gives you places of birth, which helps narrow it down.

Obviously you can't see the exact address, or who else was with the person you've searched for, but you can at least find out what town they were living in in 1921.

I've found quite a lot of people on my tree in that way, without having a sub to FMP.

ArgyllGran, if you hover over the little transcript or image thumbnail, as if you were about to click and pay (but don't) it will say something like 'living with Caroline Mary, John, and 3 others'. No surnames given, but you may recognise the forenames. If you are able to check out the named members in the same parish and reg district, you may be able to get more names and eventually identify all or most of the household.

I discovered my relative had come over from Ireland by 1921, and identified 5 out of 6 members of the household she was working for by checking out all the Caroline Marys in Coulsdon ( only 3), cross referencing with the other names listed, and cross referencing again with the 1911 census.

It was faffy, but I'm on a tight budget.

Other family members, it was easy to work out from the forenames they were still living at home with mum and dad etc.

Also, all the columns (birthplace, place of residence, YOB, etc) can be put in alphabetical or chronological order, which helps.

It's a similar (though different) wangle to finding most, if not all, of the people in one household in 1911 in Scotland, without paying to see the image.
