Hi everyone,

I'm in need of some help as tracing my Scottish family has come to a dead end. My grandfather is Robert John Ferguson, born at 177 Wallace Street, Gorbals, Glasgow on 10th October 1921 (birth registered 21st October 1921).

Robert's parents were Hugh Ferguson and Annie Ferguson (nee Kittredge - spelling could be wrong!). On Robert's birth certificate it says that Hugh and Annie were married:
"S.Ryder
1917. November 9th
Glasgow"

However I've searched the Scottish registry of marriages and I can't find anything at all. I searched a few years either side of 1917 too and under a variation of names. Nothing. I can't even find a place called S. Ryder - I'm assuming South Ryder.

I've also got Robert's marriage certificate from 1954 (London) and that describes Hugh's profession as a "ships riveter" and says he is deceased.

I know Robert had siblings and I would like to trace them, and his parents families too. But I can't do anything without a trace of Hugh and Annie's marriage. I am starting to think they didn't get officially married. Has anyone got experience or ideas about how to find something like this?

My only other idea here is that they didn't get married in Scotland and this was incorrectly recorded.

I don’t have knowledge of Scotlands People but surely you can look for children born to Hugh and Sarah Ferguson to find Robert’s siblings.

Isn’t there a 1921 Scottish census where you can look for Hugh and Sarah and also a 1939 register? Have you found them on earlier census?

Hi, I don't think the 1921 census has been released for Scotland yet. I did try to check the 1939 census and I'd need to provide a death certificate of Hugh and Annie in order to get the information, which I don't have.

I will look into searching the birth register by parents, hopefully it is possible. Thank you.

MMN is not on SP records

Hi, is that mother's maiden name? I have the entry into the register of births from 1921 and there's a box for 'mothers maiden name' and below it says 'Annie Ferguson, previously Kittredge'

Hi, yes that's the right record for my grandfather Robert's birth. I did purchase it yes and I found out his parents names from there. But the marriage information on there doesn't make sense.

Wow thank you so much. Can I ask how you found all this? I believe it is accurate as I've just found on the Scottish birth records a Theresa Ferguson born 1918 and Hughina Ferguson born 1920, the older sisters of my grandfather Robert, which matches what you have found.

I've also had a good look at the birth registers of Robert, Theresa, and Hughina. I think the "S.Ryder" was not the location of marriage but a previous name for Annie - it actually says "was Ryder" and this is clearer on Theresa and Hughina's registers. So I think you are right that Annie was married previously in Massachusetts. I will look into the records for this. Thank you very much.
