Look for info using Scotland's People website, when it is back online

If ,as your post implies, she was still single in 1911, look for a death or a marriage

Have just tried to log into Scotland's People but the message "Safari can't find the server" is coming up at present. Google says NRS buildings will remain open and on site services will continue following the death of HM.
Amokavid also having problems logging in (see General Chat board)

Maybe the reason that online services are unavailable?

Scotland's People website is probably where most of us would start looking - if she didn't marry, there may be a death search showing which hopefully would include mmn amongst other details.

You would be able to view and download a pdf of the death certificate if over 50 years ago. You would need to purchase credits on the site - 30 for £7.50 and it would be 6 credits to download a record.

There may also be possible marriages to check.

Have you considered the Orkney Family History Society..

Genuki Orkney will give lots of information where records ca be found. There is even a page for Sanday.

I can only see her in Sanday in 1881 and 1891 on FMP

Perhaps you'd post later census transcriptions for info for the helpers

Any mention of her in the Orcadian? Probably available in the British Newspaper Archive.

ArgyllGran Report 13 Sep 2022 09:55

That's what I thought, and so, looking at this again in the cold light of day, I now don't think that the 1950 ER which I posted last night is for the correct woman, and possibly not the burial either.

There was a Barbara Watt Dearness born in Edinburgh/Leith in 1917, who died in 1950, and is probably the woman on the 1950 ER.

Two of that name were born in 1928 (or maybe one registered in both Edinburgh and Leith) -
one or both of whom may be this woman:

MS Barbara W Dearness
in the UK, Electoral Registers, 2003-2010
Name: MS Barbara W Dearness
Birth Date: 1927-1929
Residence Date: 2005-2010
Address: 1/2, Pier Place, EH6 4LP
Residence Place: Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

To make matters more confusing, there were Dearness families on Sanday in various censuses, and these deaths:

DEARNESS
BARBARA
66
1944
026/ 2
Sanday

DEARNESS
BARBARA
43
1919
026/ 8
Sanday

The 1898 marriage cert is needed, to see if it's the correct one or not - but the Dearness family in 1901 seems very feasible and David Dearness was lodging with Barbara Watt's family in 1891.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Sep 2022 10:09

To put my own mind at rest, I've had a look at the marriage cert, and it IS the correct one:

21 September 1898, at 7 Laverockbank Terraced, Trinity, Leith.
David Dearness, cab driver, bachelor, 28.

David's address: 14 North Junction St, Leith.
Parents: David Dearness, crofter, and Jessie Dearness, ms Muir

Barbara G Watt, spinster, 21.

Barbara's address: 4 Admiralty Street, Leith.
Parents: Robert Watt, master grocer, and Margaret Ann Randall Watt, ms Wallace.

So the 1901 and 1911 censuses and 1955 death are the right ones, but probably not the ER .
Not sure about the burial - though it's the same year as the death, so could be OK.
There's no other death of a Barbara Dearness in Scotland in 1955.

Thank you for your help.
The information I was given was wrong she ws not on the 1901 or 1911 census for sanday.
I managed to find a marriage certificate on line for Watt/Dearness She appears to have adopted a middle name, her mother has more middle names, her father has a different occupation and it is all suspect. I know a David Dearness worked as a servant for her father.
Her adopted middle name is an old orcadian family. I have contacted a member here about their family tree and hope to get some clarification

ArgyllGran Report 13 Sep 2022 11:20

You say Barbara's father's occupation had changed.

In 1881 he's a grocer.
In 1891 he was a "grocer, baker and farmer".
In 1898 he was a grocer.
In 1901 he's not with Margaret, but Margaret (then living in Dalkeith, Edinburgh) is a "Grocer merchant's wife".

No change there, to my mind.

Robert seems to be in Stronsay in 1901, with son Robert, and listed as "farmer"
- but he was also a farmer in 1891, and in small crofting communities most people had (still have) more than one job.

Barbara's husband David has the same place and year of birth as the one who was lodging with her family.

Strangely, I don't see any record of Margaret's death - unless it's this one:

WATT [also listed as WALLACE ]
MARGARET JANE

mmn SCOTT

but this is her probate:

Margaret Ann Rendall Wallace Watt

Name: Margaret Ann Rendall Wallace Watt
Death Date: 13 May 1928
