Hi can anyone tell me how to research for a polish family, all I know is the father a Jan Ptasinski, married in Smethwick West Midlands, in 1957 and died in West Bromwich, in 1970.
He was born 4th May 1919, but I'm assuming in Poland as no record here in Ancestry, FMP or Gro records.

I understand that because of what happened during the war this research could be problematic.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you know when he came to England... Was he naturalised?

Could he perhaps have been in the Polish Army?

Many men from Poland settled in the West Midlands.

His marriage certificate would hopefully have his father's name, but we found a lot of information by writing for a record of 'our' man's Army Service.
That was some years ago, but here is a link to a thread where I mentioned this.

Unfortunately, as with some other countries, it's difficult, if not impossible, if you don't know the town or region he came from.

Thank you for your replies, Yes I am going to get his marriage certificate, I've asked his daughter if she has it before I send off for it, but as some of you say it could be a very hard problem to crack.

What I know for now is he came here after the war, he was in the Polish Army and was invalided out when he lost an eye, if that gives anyone an idea how to find him.

I also saw on FMP last night in the Electrol Roll for West Bromwich his wife as late as 2010 and several other Ptasinski,s in the West Bromwich and Wednesbury area.

I',, try the other links you've added to this message.

Thank you.
