NOTE: Importing a GEDCOM file will overwrite any information you may have entered into your family tree at TribalPages.com

When Importing a GEDCOM File into a tree program you need to establish what Character Set that program requires first, otherwise you will probably lose some of the original data from the tree in which the Gedcom file has been exported from. The most common Character Set used by tree programs is, ANSEL,but some programs may use,ANSI, UFT-8 or UNICODE. It is important to get this right and once this has been verified by checking the result after importing into a tree you should then create a Back Up. If transferring a complete tree from one computer to another, you need to reinstall the tree program again, import the data and any media ffiles for the tree into the same folder as on the old computer, for example 'My Documents' You can view a GEDCOM file without loading it into a family tree program, simply by opening the file with Microsoft Word. This allows you to see if the data is correct in respect of your own tree, without making a possible mistake of placing it into your tree. Regards,Michael

Can someone please tell me how I go about saving 'How to Gedcom' information for future reference. Thanks, Janet

Janet- When I want to save something useful like this, I copy the bits I want and past them onto a New Document - which I then label, so I can find it! - in the 'family tree' folder I keep on my desktop. Hope that helps. (If you want a step-by-step guide I can talk you through it, but didn't want to assume you know as little as I do about IT stuff!) Bx
