No luck then Merry, never mind. Yes the groom was born in Monmouthshire (LLandogo) but married in gloucester. Think i will still throw myself at the mercy of the Gwent GRO they are more likely to be able to read welsh names than the CRO in Gloucester!! Perhaps if I offer a bribe, what you all suggest?!!

Merry Report 7 Jun 2006 11:11

Gwen - I have sent you my email address, so you can send the cert to me when you get back............ Fuzzy - the bloke who was Carthelina (various spellings) for his childrens baptisms, was called Leonard when he got married! LOL I have just been looking at some lists of Welsh names, but nothing grabs me! The name does seem to begin with S (see ''s''hoemaker on the cert) and end in H (see Josep''h'' on the cert) Merry

On the 1841 census he is with a family and Barnabus Lambert born 1806 is the head, could this be his brother? 1841 census... Margaret Davis abt 1831 Newland Gloucestershire David Howells abt 1821 Gloucestershire, England Newland Gloucestershire Barnabas Lambert abt 1806 Newland Gloucestershire Penelope Lambert abt 1796 Newland Gloucestershire Richard Lambert abt 1811 Newland Gloucestershire Martha Miles abt 1839 Newland Gloucestershire Georgina.

Damn I thought if you could not find his fathers name & you sent for Barnabas's marriage cert it would be on there, but Barnabas married before registration began. BARNABAS LAMBERT Male Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: Marriages: Spouse: PENELOPE HERRING Marriage: 08 AUG 1836 Garway, Hereford, England Georgina.

Merry Report 7 Jun 2006 11:44

Nice one Georgina! The answer to this dilemma must lie in the Llandogo non-conformist records. All the C of E baptisms for this time frame in Llandogo are for one family, which do not include a Richard with a right-ish year of birth and do not include a Barnabas. I looked to see if Barnabas could have bumped of Penelope and re-married, but he is a widower in 1871 and died 5 years later.....no sign of any new wives :o(( Merry

Fuzzy, Get ready for more goosebumps - It looks very much ike Linah to me - ??Could b short for your Carthalina ????????? Got granddaughter here but will keep looking when I can during the day and will get back to you. Dea x

Dea

Dea Report 7 Jun 2006 12:27

Slight update - Linah IS a Welsh name but it appears to be female (Aform of Elen - welsh for Helen) Will keep looking. Dea x

Merry

Merry Report 7 Jun 2006 12:31

Oh nice one Dea.....It does look like Linah, doesn't it?! Maybe it's not a real diminutive.....just that the vicar didn't hear the name properly and just wrote down the bit he heard? As he was writing a male name he wouldn't want to end it with an ''A'' because that would suggest a female name, but ''AH'' would be OK!!!! Merry

Georgina Report 7 Jun 2006 12:37

There was a Marriage for a Leonard Lambeth... LEONARD LAMBETH Male Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: Marriages: Spouse: MARTHA BALDWIN Marriage: 17 JUL 1788 Llandogo, Monmouth, England Georgina.

Just checking in guys, you lot have been busy eh? The baptism record I found for Richard Lambert in Llandogo was Father Catherlina and Mother Martha, so perhaps Georgina had hit the nail on the head and it is Leonard, as Merry said Cartheliner was Leonard when he married!! although what I have on cert must be a shortening for that. I love these brain teasers, but sometimes wish they weren't mine!!! thanks again you lovely people for all your help I will check back later :) xx

Just another thought chaps, Carthaliner/Leonard/Barnabus/Linah's occupation is a papermaker, this could help narrow it down, having said that the area is riddled with papermakers!!! x
