Absolutely, if I had never come on this board I would be working solely from the ancestry resources and probably not very well either. Id had no idea about techniques nor all the other info available out there. Its an incredible resource with people on here who have decades of knowledge, thank gawd !

I have posted one query on this board - re marriage records and had 5 very helpful replies in a matter of minutes. Perhaps some people do become side-tracked and maybe a system similar to that which removes 'trying to find' messages could be employed.

Hi I absolutely agree with Heather when I started my family tree two years ago, I knew nothing. I regularly help people both on the Tips Board and the General Board, and people help me.Isn't that what this site is all about. So what if we get a humerous post occasionally on the tips board nobody's asking people to read them if they don't won't to. For me they are a bit of light hearted relief. Cheryl

Ed - in case we are all getting the wrong end of the stick here, to what sort of threads are you referring?

Victoria Report 26 Apr 2006 13:23

Oh Ed! Life can be too serious you know! It is now accepted that laughing has a very beneficial effect on one's health, since it boosts the immune system. There are some very funny people here - and there is almost always an underlying genealogy topic even on the lightest hearted threads!! On this board you can therefore, get: help with searches, learn heaps so that you can do more for yourself (and others) - & give your immune system a boost at the same time. What more could anyone ask for? I think the sheer number of replies on the more general and humorous threads speaks volumes for members attitudes toward them. Victoria

Not that many moons ago Ted Lunt posted a joke on the tips board, the heading said it was a joke. The first reply was 'wrong board muppet' If the respondent didn't want to read what was clearly titled a joke why read and post, what was in essence an abusive reply. It's a bit like going to see Chubby Brown and complaining about the language. If we all walked around with a serious face all the time how depressing would it be?If one thing i do makes one person smile each day then i'm happy. Glen

And lets be honest, Ted's jokes can only loosely be termed as such. (Heather wondering if the turnips are now mashed enough to add to her braised beef tonight)

Hi Ed, Does it matter what threads go on what board as long as everyone gets all there look ups done, +Questions answered And everyone is happy and not arguing + it is well worth the money we pay. June x

Heather, think very, very carefully. Would you really want Glens turnips knowing where they have been? *wonders how long before Olde Crone turns up with her turnip surprise*

Meercat Apologies as i obviously misunderstood the intention on that thread, see how easy it is.Doh. The only suprise with the turnips is that my eyes aren't watering more than they are.The tinsel is starting to scratch and dazzle me in the sunlight too. Glen

Heather beat me to it.LOL But then again i was just looking at her reference to her lot being in the Domesday Book. More likely that it was the day we all became doomed i'd say. Glen ******now trying to creep away without shimmering, scraping or dropping a turnip!!!!********

Sweet Alice? lol Meer, what a misnomer. Someone said I had gone all girly on them with the name change. Never though of it that way, just thought Tina would have my a*se if I used Cheshire Cat in any way, shape or form. pmsl!!! ps, why do you love lion? I thought meercats preferred snakes.

Actually Ed has a point about the boards in a way. i have a pet hate with them and that they are just so crap to use. This day and age we are used to forums etc and this community here would be sooooo much better if there was the freedom and ease of use that these other forums use. However I get the feeling that because they want you to pay and register they have kept this really dreadful bulletin board style system to control everything. If they opened the boards into one of the many forum systems they would get used a lot more. So come on GR why not implement a phpBB or even the Invision powerboard forum so we can help each other even more. I'm sure they are making enough money. Oh and can someone tell me who Ed was refering too when he said GR had been taken over by a certain company?

Merry

Merry Report 26 Apr 2006 14:52

Ian, I don't like the board ''style'' much either, but I am too stupid to use anyone elses message boards.....so I would have nowhere to go if these changed to something ''better'' :o(( Merry
