The best thing to do is have a look: http://www.tribalpages(.)com/ It explains itself on the home page. If you put a tree up, you can choose whether to make your names public or not. If they are public, the names can be searched by anyone. If you set the vistor password for your tree, people will only be able to tell that a person is in your tree, but can't look at it until they have contacted you and asked nicely to see your tree. Can I ask a question? I have just started to export my tree to tribal but am I correct in saying that I have to set another password so it is not public or is that what I did when I signed up & said i wanted to keep it private????????? Thanking you Lorraine

LindaG Report 30 Mar 2006 22:35

If you said you want to keep it private, your names will not be searchable. So nobody will know about your tree. However anyone can get into it iand look f they know your User ID for Tribal Pages. (or mis-type someone else's!) Once your tree is loaded, go into Edit mode -: Click on Edit and then put in your password Click on Tools Click on Preferences Click on Web Site Settings In here you can set a password for people to view your tree. Make it different to your Administrator password! Click on sign out You then get the password box and will have to enter your visitor password to view your tree L

I've imported many times, but never exported. From these boards the answer seems to be 'How long is a piece of string?' It's probably extra busy with people downloading for Tribal Pages! Linda PS Have you noticed that seem to be an awful lot of Linda's on this board?!

Hopefully you've gone to bed already, but for others... It should only take a few minutes at the most to upload your GEDCOM to Tribal ready for processing if you have broadband. Once you have the message saying it is in the system, you can shut down or do what you like. The processing is happening on Tribal's computer. My tree took about 12 hours to be processed, hubbie's took less than hour *stamps feet - not fair!* If it's taking 1.5 hours to upload to Tribal then something has gone wrong. The file had to be less than 8 meg - not that big. On broadband, that's nothing - on dial-up it could take a while. You won't do any harm by shutting down - half way through the upload. However, you would need to start again at another time to get it uploaded ready for processing. Lx PS If you do choose to allow your names to be searched in Tribal, be aware that their search engines refresh once a fortnight. This means your tree may not show on searches for two weeks!

Morning Alan. Export your tree to a GEDCOM. You can do this from GR, but be patient. It takes ages (hours)! Or you can do it from a prog like FTM at home. Set up an account with Tribal Click on Edit and enter your Administrator password Go to Tools Go to Files Scroll Down and in the Import ing a GEDCOM File section, browse to find ther GEDCOM that you have just created. Click on Senf File. Wait. The file will upload to Tribal. Once it has uploaded, close your browser Window and forget about Tribal until you get an email saying it has been processed. You won't be able to do anything in your Tribal account until it has. Once it has... the world's your lobster! L

What problems? I have just deleted my tree and uploaded a new Gedcom with over 4300 entries. I have not experienced any problems!!! I think people need to look at what GR is here for. It is not a substitute for maintaining your family tree in a proper package that can do reporting etc. I see Tribal Pages as in this category - it serves a different purpose to GR. GR holds basic family tree information for the purpose of finding matches with other people, and to provide message boards like this. It has it's faults, but then nobody is perfect. Paul

Uploaded my GEDCOM to Tribal Pages the other day and received my email around tea time yesterday. Went and had a look. It looks good and I have created a password for the rest of the family so that they can have a butchers at it. Hopefully will get round to adding a few photos and census records to it. Anne

If you are uploading a Gedcom File to another site please ensure that you have filtered the information. Foe example you need to hide the details of living persons who have not given their permission to have them displayed to the general public. N.B. If you are planning to upload a tree on to here, make sure that, after you have applied secrecy to living persons, that you put your own personal info back on or else GR can't import it as the Primary Person (You) can't be identified.

Oops, I had forgotten about Gencircles. I joined that about 2 years ago and have hardly looked at it since. Does anyone know if it is possible on Gencircles to get info or email a link without having to pay the 30 dollars membership?

LindaG

LindaG Report 31 Mar 2006 15:17

I've been having a play with GEN circles and you do seem to be able to get submitter's email addresses and info about people without paying. I'm sure I'll find the catch soon. Lx
