Jess. Sorry about the omission of data that would be helpful. Here is what I know. Matthew Skirving was married to Marion Thompson; I have no documented proof just a familysearch that the event took place in Manchester in 1854. There is an 1881 census from scotlandspeople that lists Marion as a widow aged 42 with children Agnes & Marion ages 15 & 22. They had all their children, as best as I can tell in dumbarton, Scotland from 1855-1863 and at least 3 died very young, 2 girls were named after 2 that died. Matthew died in 1878 at age 41 in Tradeston, Lanark of typhus fever. His parents were a William & Agnes Skirving, residence not noted on Matthew's death record. I have been unable to locate any birth or death dates for his wife Marion; nor have I been able to for Matthew's birth. I am hoping that an 1871 census will give me some info to work with. Thank you, Lawrence

Hi Jess, thanks very much. I think the only one it can be is the one from Salford. We know very little about him except he had two brothers that we know of Jim and Albert. On my mothers marriage certificate in 1945 he was living at 10 Maurice (thats what it looks like) St. Nelson Lanc's and he was a miller. I don't know if this later information is of any use. Thanks for your help anyway, Gloria

Hi Jess, could you see if you can try and find a couple of people on the 1871 census for me please. these people are Clara Louisa Haynes nee Newell ( not sure year of marriage) born october 1842 in the city of london and her husband William Haynes born approx 1838/39 born in surrey. this couple had a son, William, between 1870-1872. i have found them on the 1881 census living in Acorn Place, Camberwell (RG11/0685, ED 20, Folio 21 and page 35) but cannot seem to find them on the 1871. if you find anything, thanks very much Alison

Hi Jess, Her husband was Bernard Cochrane but he was a soldier so may not have been at home then it is rumoured that he died in the Crimean war but we haven't been able to prove or disprove this yet. She is shown as a widow Mary Cochrane on the 1881 census living in 5 Kenwood Avenue,St pauls,Deptford. 1851 census single as Mary Fitzgerald living in St James Place,St Pauls Deptford and same again for 1891Mary Cochrane widow at 13 Rutts Terrace,St Pauls,Deptford. She did have a son Edward so maybe that will help reduce the choices??He was not showing on 1881 census but maybe will be on the 1871? Hope this helps Jenny

Hi Jess, I am trying to find out more about my grandfather Mr William Herbert Marsden, he married Lily Glover who was born c1896, and they had twins Lily and Jack. They lived in Nelson Lancashire, but Lily Glover was born in Bolton, and my grandad I have been led to believe could have been born on Stockport or Salford. I know I haven't given you many clues but hope you can help or push me in the right direction. many thanks Gloria

Jenny Report 21 Mar 2005 17:30

Hi Jess My Bernardo's were not linked to the Police,Alfred was an Icecream maker in 1870 when he married Ellen Elizabeth Tott in Holborn, his address in 1870 was 4 summer Street,Backhill hers was 1 high Street,Kingsland this is West Hackney I think. Their daughter Elleanor Susannah born 1871 in Clapton,Hackney. In the 1881 census they were living in 8 Orchrd St,Islington,Middlesex and when their second daughter Jane was born 1873 they were living at 82 Mildmay Rd,Islington. I need to find Alfred to locate his place of birth all I know from 1881 census was Italy. Sometimes Bernardo is shown as BARNARDO (1881 census),BERNARDI(marriage record) BERNARDE (Marriage Index FreeBMD) Hope this helps. Thanks for your time. Jenny

Jess Thanks, I didnt have any luck either altho I didnt have as many facts when I was looking so was really doing the needle in the haystack thing.. Found it strange too not to find Arthur & elizabeth (Johns Son & dau in law ) with their two kids Ellen(Nell) & Arthur aged 3 & 1 approx on the 1901. really been unlucky this family I think with the keeping of their records Did find John,s eldest daughter Esther Jane & her husband & daughter on the 1901 so some records are there. Esther tho had moved to Camberwell London . But of course its John I,ve got stuck on & progressing back from him . thanks
