who registered Patricia's death, then, was it her mother? or the family she was 'billeted' with? again - it would only cost time if someone was in the area where the death was registered and was able to access the parish record which might show if her father was deceased by the time she was killed on the railway line. c xx

The Royal Artillery was created in 1924 from the Royal Field Artillery and the Royal Garrison Artillery so that may put paid to my earlier suggestion of service in the first world war.

If the father was a serving soldier, he would get special leave for a family death, wouldn't he?

CherryCrumbles

CherryCrumbles Report 11 Aug 2007 23:12

yes Janice, compassionate leave, espec as it was his daughter. c xx

Hi all, From Rachel's research we know that Henrietta lived in Engineer Rd, Woolwich until 1971 I have taken a look through the records from Jan 1933 to Dec 1950 for any child born in Woolwich with a mothers maiden name of Armstrong or Wilson in the event that she had other children with William or children with George Francis. Looked for children with surname Francis, mother's maiden name Wilson or Armstrong ( Woolwich) Looked for children with surname Armstrong with maiden name Wilson or Armstrong (Woolwich) The only child I could find was: 1950 Q4 Kevin J Armstrong, Armstrong, Woolwich 5d 1049 I must admit that I am going screen blind so may well have missed an entry. Anyone up to the challenge of checking for children of Henrietta & William 1933 - 1949 Henrietta & George 1949 - ? Many thanks Paul

and the Free BMD has no William Armstrong deaths from 1945 up to 1962 - I did an All County open search. I dont think he would be registered as Bill surely? I wonder if the poor man had been taken to a POW camp at the time Patricia died? he could have survived the war, wasnt it 1962 when Henrietta remarried? and it has to be said, the Free BMD is not complete. c xx

Janice Report 11 Aug 2007 23:19

FreeBMD coverage for those years is virtually non-existent. It needs to be an Ancestry trawl! Rachel found a possible death in 1943.

Hi, Just catching up with some of the earlier replies. William Armstrong was the informant on his daughter, Patricia's birth certificate when registered in April 1934. Cheers Paul

Only a thought but could William have lived until 1962? This would account for why Henrietta didn't remarry until then.

I'm thinking that if Kevins mothers maiden name was Armstrong, she'd either married her paternal cousin, or was an unmarried mother. Is someone with ancestry able to search the BMD index for a Francis birth mmn Wilson? And she could have been calling herself Mrs Francis before they actually got married. c xx

Just reread the thread and the death Rachel found was in Q1 so no good. Janice

Claire, thee and me are the great minds that think alike :) It occurred to me that William might have lived up to 1962 but he would have been prevented from going to his daughter's funeral if he'd been in a prisoner of war camp for the duration. This could explain why there is no William Armstrong (wife Henrietta) entry in the CWG, and also account for Henrietta Armstrong's re-marriage in 1962 rather than an earlier year. c xx

Mummy Bear Report 11 Aug 2007 23:47

All Given that William Armstrong didn’t appear in the ERs after 1939/40 I searched deaths from 1938 – 1945; two stand out: Q1 1941 William Armstrong 35 Strood 2a 2392 Q1 1943 William Armstrong 68 Greenwich 1d 796 I’m leaning towards the 1943 one, this would mean that Hetty lost both her husband and then her daughter with in a few months of each other. I think my next steps are death cert followed by the marriage – let me know your opinions. The marriage I'm thinking about is: Q2 1933 Woolwich 1d 2308 Henrietta Wilson & William Armstrong Thanks Rachel

CherryCrumbles

CherryCrumbles Report 11 Aug 2007 23:56

Hi Rachel would a man aged 68 in 1943 be Patricia's father? I guess its not impossible but it would mean that Henrietta married a much older man. is there anyone who can get to the Woolwich register office to study parish records for the 1933 marriage? that would save the cost of a certificate. as I said earlier, the parish record would show the respective father's names which might help trace the families in the 1901 census and lead to siblings' descendants being found. No one in Genes seems to be researching a Henrietta Maud Wilson. There is a Henrietta born 1908..... but not Newc/Tyne. c xx

I've got ancestry if you tell me what to look for and what years I'm happy to search

CherryCrumbles

CherryCrumbles Report 12 Aug 2007 00:08

Hi Linda its become quite a quest and I am sure Paul will be pleased to have 'another pair of hands'. What's needed is : births, Armstrong, mothers name Wilson, from 1934 onwards (already got Patricia). births, Francis, mothers name Wilson, from 1962 onwards. death, William Armstrong, from 1934 up to 1962 (his age not known but old enough to be a married man and serving soldier in WW2). I'd say any area, because they could have moved around. c xx
