Hi there,

I know this is an old post but has anyone claim the family bible yet?

I've been researching people who dedicated stones for the Wicken Methodist Chapel in 1911 and a George Townsend was one person. I live in Soham, a short drive from Wicken, and the name Townsend is well known. If you still have the bible I'm sure Soham Roots would love to hear from you. You can find them at www.sohamroots.co.uk

All the best,
Sue

Hi Susan, I was in contact with Jo several times over this bible. She really tried to get in touch with Ann but never got any reply. As far as I know she eventually sent it to the Cambs Library where they have a room called The Cambs Room. As renevations were going on at the library at the time, she was told to send it to the library at Milton Rd, Cambs. It should have been put into the Cambs Room when renevations were finished. At least it would be looked after & not destroyed. I think anyone can look at it but it stays there. You may be able to take photos of the pages. Hope this helps.

I know this is a few years later but did you manage to find any Townsend family who were interested in the family bible?

I've come across your thread because I'm trying to find out any information regarding a 'G Townsend' who lived in this area (Fordham/Soham/Wicken). The Wicken Methodist Church building turns 100 years old next year (2011) and a G Townsend is one of the people on a dedication stone on the front wall of the church.

I think this family may be who I'm looking for.

All the best,
Sue

Hi all,

I've sent another message to Anne re Laura Townsend of Fordham. Anne's Laura is certainly the daughter of the original owner of the bible and his wife, another Laura, so I do hope I can soon return it to it's rightful home.

If I don't hear from Anne then I will definitely contact Cambs fhs - they may be able to trace descendents on the Townsend side.

I'll keep you informed........

Jo.

Hi, on a Tuesday we have a man comes to our local library who is a member of the Cambs fhs. If you like I can ask him next week if he knows of anyone researching these names. I have some Baileys in my oh. tree at Wicken, Cambs. Village very close to Fordham. If you get no joy from the person on Genes regarding these names, please let me know.

Dee, I think this Bible might have found its real home, if you read a few posts prior to these.

ohhhhh, no, no no, don't throw it out!

If it helps there was a marriage of a George Townsend to a Charlotte Rix 8/9/25 in East Dereham. Maybe this couple are ancestors??

Have you tried contacting the Norfolk Records Office, maybe they can put a notice up or something?

I would love to have had a family bible from my tree, but sadly have not....it is a precious thing!

Is there a Cambridge family history society? I am sure they would be interested. Or maybe the records office.

Hi
I've just sent a message to Anne. I do hope she gets in touch because it does look as if she is looking for this Townsend family. I will be very pleased to see the bible go to a new home.

Sadly Tina, it is quite plain without colour plates but it is the names and dates which I thought would be precious to someone.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and encouragement.

Jo.

The choice is either contact Anne or trying & track these people down through the census & the BMD.

Send the details to the Church at Soham to see if they have a Parish magazine, and you could ask for info on those people and say you have something they might be interested in.
Good luck

If you use the quick search boxes at the top of the screen for Laura Townsend you will find that someone called "Anne" has these people in her tree

Agree with Kitty, please do not throw out this lovely old book. They usually have lovely coloured prints. If all else fails take it to the local auction house but not a recycle unit.
