42. When you go to buy bread in the grocery store, have you ever wondered which is the freshest, so you "squeeze" for freshness or softness? Did you know that bread is delivered fresh to the stores five days a week? Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each day has a different color twist tie. They are: Monday = Blue, Tuesday = Green, Thursday = Red Friday = White and Saturday = Yellow. So if today was Thursday, you would want red twist tie; not white which is Fridays (almost a week old)! The colors go alphabetically by color Blue- Green - Red - White - Yellow, Monday through Saturday. Very easy to remember. I thought this was interesting. I looked in the grocery store and the bread wrappers DO have different twist ties, and even the ones with the plastic clips have different colors. You learn something new everyday! Enjoy fresh bread when you buy bread with the right color on the day you are shopping.

Don't laugh this not a joke!! If a recipe calls for a pound of mincemeat, use half as much and bulk it out with either a large cup of porridge oats, or a cup of pearl barley.Feeding four kids on a wing and a prayer made me inventive.By the way, it tastes the same, and is just as nutricious.

Cure for headaches: take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away.

Or Ron's way is... Take a lime, mix it with tequila, chill and drink! lol

To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.

If you accidentally oversalt a dish while it's still cooking, drop in a peeled potato and it will absorb the excess salt for an instant "fix-me-up."

Plain old Club Soda is a household helpers must. Not only does it get lots of “oops”es out of laundry (like red wine), it also does wonders on your carpets! Next time you have a spot, pour a bit of Club Soda on it. Give it 10 minutes to work. Then pat dry!

If you're buying anything off the internet including insurances, holidays etc, go through cash back sites such as Quidco.

I make soup out of the stalks of broccoli and cauliflower rather than throw them away, once they have been wized up you don't know they are stalks.
I bought a micro cloth from a pound store for cleaning windows and it is great, I don't need to use any window cleaning products now.
I use white vinegar and bicarb for loads of cleaning jobs.

If you've finished a box of wine, blow some air into the tap to inflate the bag, you can then get another half glass of wine from it.

If the bottom of your iron is covered in brown stains, cut a lemon in half and rub the juice over the marks, then wipe off with a cloth to remove.

The inside of a banana skin will polish your leather shoes for you, just rub them over afterwards with an old cloth or soft paper towel, kitchen roll type. Then put banana skin under your roses to rot down as the potassium is good for the roses. Susan, I think that's what Ron meant when he said polish the table, eat the banana and use the skin.
Patent bags and shoes can be cleaned with a little milk on a cloth, buff up with paper towel or cloth as before.
Shoes will last longer if you get them repaired before the heels are too worn down and shabby and soles done before they wear through. Find and get to know a good shoe repair shop/cobbler and he will probably do small jobs free, like stitch a handle back on a bag or something. Mine does. I just pop some change into the charity box on the counter.

Keep some porridge oats ( around 50p a bag from Tesco or similar) in an airtight jar and add a spoonful to shop bought muesli to make it go further, you can also add some to minced beef mixes like bolognaise or savoury mince. I did it the other day and no one noticed it to be any different to my usual savoury mince.

Cut open toothpaste tubes to get the last few squeezes out - this also applies to creams like hand/face cream and shampoo etc
