These Charity doorknockers seem to keep a record of whether you are in so that they can come back. This happened to a friend recently - she had heard a knock and looked out of her top window to see someone crossing over between two gardens - he came back later that evening when I was visiting her. Then a week later I had one come to my door twice, once in the afternoon and once in the evening - because she hadn't kept her records properly.
Don't they realise that lots of people living on their own won't open their front doors in the evenining?

Aww Shimms, I'm glad it was legitimate after all, but you did the right thing.

The point is, there are plenty of people who would go door-to-door collecting under the guise of charity, and this could so easily have been one of them. Who would know?

I'm like others, I don't give anything or sign anything at the door, and I certainly give absolutely no information over the phone, even on a call I know is legitimate, like the one from BT offering me a credit card a couple of weeks ago.

I explain that I give to various charities DtH, usually they understand.

If I'm giving money directly, it's to ARC (arthritis) and similar, charities that are dear to my heart, have also stood outside of M&S in Swansea with a collection tin, my auntie nearby collecting too. xxx

Have put a copy of my reply from Oxfam further down David. xxx

Such good advice, especially about the handbag/purse. xxx

Hi everyone

I've had a reply from Oxfam, such a nice letter too ...

Dear Mrs .........

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the Oxfam representative who came to your house. Please accept my apologies for the delay in my response to you.

I am happy to confirm that we do have Oxfam representatives in your area at the moment. I do appreciate your concern regarding callers to homes and I think you've done exactly the right thing.

With best wishes and thanks again.

Dear Sirs

Re: OXFAM REPRESENTATIVE, TANZANIA

A few moments ago a representative of Oxfam banged on my front door panel requesting that I sign a form agreeing to donate monies re 90% of Tanzanian peoples dying on a daily basis.

Having explained that I give to various other charities, and having difficulty persuading him that I was unable at this moment in time to give him my details, he finally departed. It was only when I closed my front door that I realized I had seen a purple T-shirt emblazoned with an Oxfam logo yet had been provided with no proof of identity. A cautious woman, I always request sight of a Collector's ID ... it was the T-shirt that lulled me, thus the reason I contact you now.

Would you please confirm that you have representatives in this area as soon as possible please as should it be a scam, I am most concerned that elderly and other people may be vulnerable.

Thanking you in anticipation of your prompt reply.

Yours sincerely

............... (Mrs)

Thanks everyone

Do you know ...

I always check ID yet this time, because his T-shirt said Oxfam I did not. It was only when I closed my front door that I thought it odd, thought it best to check, think it was because he tried to make me feel guilty, said all my neighbours were signing. I had explained that I give to certain causes already, e.g. Head Injuries and similar, Muscular Dystrophy, have a nephew who had a kidney transplant, another special cause.

I'll see if I can contact Oxfam, hopefully he is genuine yet as TW says it may be that they are not. I am not easily 'fooled' yet I did not and I cannot believe that I did not, ask to see his ID. xxx

Uggers, I sign, what a lovely cause my friend. xxx

Merlin Report 20 Apr 2009 18:41

Yes they do,and also Accost People on the streets to get people to sign up for direct debits to the Charity Concerned, lots of them do it not only Oxfam,so be careful what you sign or do.Just think of the very High Salaries of the people who head these Charities.and remember Charity should begin at home.(Locally).**M**.

Nobody can go door to door without a lisence, and ID which can and should be checked before giving anything away.

You need to call Oxfam and ask if there is a door to door campaign in your area, and if the answer is no, call the police and inform them. They may be targetting pensioners if they are not genuine.

A lot of charities do this. Why not phone your local Oxfam and ask them? They'd probably be better informed than people on here

We started supporting the National Deaf Children Society this way so I know it does happen.
