Good grief! (but not the bilngual version?)
I gotta say I have huge problems with it. I'm nobody's son, there is no god, and for a whole lot of us (you two included!) this isn't a native land. Makes me cringe.
My next post would have been what Gretzky was seen to say when another of those greatest scores was made more recently, but I'd get banned, out of cultural insensitivity.
It can be read in a comment posted multiply by "Kathleen" at a tribute page about the event by Wesley Crusher himself:

Ahhh! "THE" goal!
No, never saw that one, as I was a newbie to the country, having been here just 22 days. My taste for hockey hadn't been whetted yet.

Yes, yes, the jersey is just too hot to wear ... out there in lotus land. We real Canadians are still waiting for planting season to arrive.
I may be forced to watch some of the very very final finals (oh, those finals do go on, don't they?), the only time No.1 pays much attention himself. Or I could just work through the evening as I usually do ...
But I'll bet I have you beat on one, er, score, as it were.
I saw Paul Henderson score that goal! You know ... *the* goal. I was young, had no classes that afternoon, had been imbibing my vodka and lemonade (couldn't afford orange juice), and we didn't have cable TV. It was that or General Hospital. ;)

We Canadians argue? Never! If we get upset, we just throw snowball at each other while taking refuge behind the dog sled that is parked next to the igloo ;)
Morning Jean, and Kitty and Cat (a bit late, I know)
Don Cherry, ya got to love him! He should be on the next $1 coin they design. Oh never mind, there's already a loon on it.
Stompin Tom Connors is a bit before my time. The youtube clip was interesting to watch. It must be ancient. When was the last time a fan wore a three piece suit to a game? The footage of the players was interesting too. Did they hold back on a good punch because they didn't wear helmets? Maybe they were affraid if they fell their heads would smash on the ice.
You have to admit, a GOOD hockey game consists of a few good punch ups! We had, in the "good old days" the best scrapper - Tiger Williams. Now, he knew how to fight :)
As far as Corrie goes, it has shifted to 3.30pm. Far too early for me. Hence the reason to watch on the net, or get up at some unGodly hour on a Sunday morning to catch the five episodes from the week before.
East Enders I gave up on. It cut into my Sunday watching all the episodes at once.
Sylvia! Good to hear from you again. Hockey fever sure has hit the city. It's great to see so many supporters wearing their jerseys and t shirts.
I can't get my car flag on my new car as it has window rain guards. I gave it to my daughter and her boyfriend who forgot it was on their car and rolled down the automatic windows. It's somewhere on the freeway :) A girlfriend was on the freeway during rush hour, did the same thing, but made the mistake of looking back and ended up rear ending a flat bed truck. Ooops :)
We were lucky enough to be given tickets to the second game in round one. Great game.
Fingers and everything crossed for Thursday night's (5pm start) game.
Janey - live a little and watch along with us :)
Off to wash my Canuck t shirt for work in the morning. The jersey is just a little too hot to wear.

Hi ya Deb ....... from your fellow Vancouverite xxx
Janie told me I should find you, even gave me the URL for this thread!
I watch the Canucks on TV .... especially when it gets to the end of the seaosn and the playoffs
They did well last night!
I do however go and do other things when Don Cherry comes on!!
All good redblooded Canucks should support the Canucks as they are the only Canadian team left in the playoffs.
However ...............
.... I don't understand this support for Corrie!!
I guess I left the UK too long ago. Used to watch it in its early days, but left the UK in 1967, and we didn't have a tv over here until 1974. Never got into the habit of watching soaps over here ..... and never got back into Corrie when CBC did start carrying it.
OH went to school with William Roache, who's played Ken since Day 1. It was a case of big boy (William) doing an extra term before being called up and "little" boy in his first term.

Oh dear, I think 'elegance' is exactly what Don Cherry is aiming for!
I must apologize for the confusion - that wasn't a dig at the collective you's fashion sense. That vulgar practice started Stateside, I'm sure.
We don't have our own Canadian Big Brother (or Jeopardy ... we're just too small a market), so No.1 and I are US Big Brother addicts. For several years, every time one of the women stood up, she would pull her bottoms *down*. Normal people pull them up, duh.
Has no one enjoyed the Stompin Tom Connors video? It's mostly footage of hockey fights (ha, you don't get them in your 'football'), so you can click alongside to sing along with, for example, Sudbury Saturday Night.
I lived in Sudbury for a summer. I can vouch for the lyrics.
The girls are out to Bingo and the boys are gettin' stinko, And we think no more of Inco on a Sudbury Saturday night. The glasses they will tinkle when our eyes begin to twinkle, And we'll think no more of Inco on a Sudbury Saturday night.
With Irish Jim O'Connel there and Scotty Jack MacDonald, There's honky Fredrick Hurchell gettin' tight, but that's alright, There's happy German Fritzy there with Frenchy getting tipsy, And even Joe the Gypsy knows it's Saturday tonight.
Now when Mary Ann and Mabel come to join us at the table, And tell us how the Bingo went tonight, we'll look a fright. But if they won the money, we'll be lappin' up the honey, boys, 'Cause everything is funny, for it's Saturday tonight
The girls are out to Bingo and the boys are gettin' stinko, And we think no more of Inco on a Sudbury Saturday night. The glasses they will tinkle when our eyes begin to twinkle, And we'll think no more of Inco on a Sudbury Saturday night.
We'll drink the loot we borrowed and recuperate tomorrow, 'Cause everything is wonderful tonight, we had a good fight, We ate the Dilly Pickle and we forgot about the Nickel, And everybody's tickled, for it's Saturday tonight
The songs that we'll be singing, they might be wrong but they'll be ringing, When the lights of town are shining bright, and we're all tight, We'll get to work on Monday, but tomorrow's only Sunday, And we're out to have a fun day for it's Saturday tonight. Yeah
The girls are out to Bingo and the boys are gettin' stinko, And we think no more of Inco on a Sudbury Saturday night. The glasses they will tinkle when our eyes begin to twinkle, And we'll think no more of Inco on a Sudbury Saturday night.
We'll think no more of Inco on a Sudbury Saturday night.

And hey Deb - if you get BBC Canada, you must have pay ergo timeshifting.
We tape Corrie early in the evening on Newfoundland or Nova Scotia CBC. Before hockey starts. Until they totally pre-empt it for the last round, of course, and we fall another two weeks behind real time ...
That's how it happened that a couple of years ago I was watching Corrie and one of the women was walking around with her belly sticking out between her top and her bottom, and I thought oh no, don't tell me that a year from now women are still dressing in that vulgar manner ... because I'm seeing TV from 10 months in the future ... because the Brits are 10 months ahead of us in Corrie ... you see ...

Okay, we're supposed to be speaking "English" here, so we have to offer the locals some translation.

Don Cherry?? Bring 'im on!!!
For the foreigners: google Don Cherry. Then click for google images. You might want to put on your sunglasses. And if you try any of the youtubes, activate your bigotry filters.
One thing that kills me about Premier League is the commentators going on about "the Portuguese" doing this and "the Spaniard" doing that.
Feels like Hockey Night in Canada if Don Cherry were in charge!

Are you living in the Dark Ages woman? You bow to a Man U supporter?? I thought you were stronger than that.
How dare No.1 take over the TV when Eastenders is on. By the way if you lived on the west coast it is on on a Sunday. I'm more a Corrie person myself.
CBC has preempted my daily dose of Corrie with playoff action. I can catch it on the net, so no big deal. A small price to pay for the annual ice fever that sweep our nation.
I question your citizenship - not a hockey supporter (especially in the playoffs??? The play offs are a national pass time.
My OH is more than welcome to get up at 5am and hog the TV all he wants to watch our beloved Liverpool FC live. I'll catch the highlights on the news hour.
The Senators had their chance to bring the cup home to the east coast looks like they blew that chance.
Fingers crossed that the Canucks go all the way. - I know if they do, you will be sitting there with your Costco size bag of Miss Vickies, a bottle or two of the Okanagan's best, and the Maple Leaf draped somewhere on your person.
By the way - I'm an import. Wasn't born or bred here.............. Just love "The good old Hockey Game".
Maybe Don Cherry should interview you??? Now that would be interesting!

Hahahaha. Do I watch NHL. Not on your nelly.
I was compelled to when I was a child, having a father and two brothers and all. But that was back before there were more than two channels, and it was made up for by the steady supply of potato chips that came with. (No Miss Vicky's in those days, just good old Hostess in the silver bags.)
I watch English Premier League, of course! Of course, I'm compelled to do that, too. And No.1 doesn't provide any compensation at all. And sometimes it interferes in my watching of my East Enders on Saturday morning, which I have to tape in snippets through the week because ManU might be locked in mortal combat with Chelsea at the exact same time as Ian Beale is dusting it up with a Mitchell.
In order of preference for sports watching on TV, from absolute refusal to have it in the house to tolerance:
US football -- abhorrent, horrible wall of non-stop noise, incomprehensible activities (Cdn football would come here, except that nobody really watches that, do they?) Golf. Supreme boredom with irritating hushed voices. Tennis. Supreme boredom with irritating plocking sounds. Baseball. Civilized but not very interesting. Curling. Mildly amusing. Soccer (football to the limeys). Easy to understand, occasionally entertaining, I get to have opinions about the merits of cards issued. Paint drying. Preferable to any of the above.
But okay, okay, okay. The Canucks should bring the blasted thing home. Although "home" really would be the nation's capital, wouldn't it?
Go find Sylvia (in Canada). I'm sure she'll join your team. ;) Although ... she wasn't born here, so she might not be a major enthusiast ...
