So very glad to hear my cousin is still with us Brian!!

I had my tonsils out right after first year law school exams. I'd spent the year in Torts class reading about tonsillectomy deaths - including from having a sponge left in the patient's throat. I made my will first. Those things do happen, however much they shouldn't.

Best to all from over this side of the water.

Brian, that is totally unacceptable and shocking.

Best wishes to your daughter for a full recovery.

In my day ahteatre nurse was dedicated to count swabs as they were used, make a note of how many, and count them after the procedure.

Taking months to spot a perforated bowel, well no excuses are valid.

Just a quick update:
She seems to have suffered no damage from the airway blockage, but her mouth and throat are still very sore.

She went to the dentist yesterday and was given another course of antibiotics and will go back there next week for the stitches to be taken out if they have not dissolved by then.

As my OH said at the weekend "Thank God we aren't making funeral arrangements".

I HOPE THE HOSPITAL CARRY OUT A FULL INVESTIGATION, AND THAT YOUR DAUGHER MAKES A FULL RECOVERY

Thank you all for your good wishes.

I think we are all in a bit of a state of shock .

My daughter actually works in a clerical capacity at the hospital concerned. She's been signed off for a fortnight.

But- What a terrible blunder, and what a relief she coughed the swab up.

In the OT the swabs are supposed to be counted before and after an operation,,
Someones neck will be on the block for this,,

Dear Brian

Don't dwell on if.

Your daughter is still with you alive and in a few days she will be back home. That is all that matters for now.

You and your family have had a terrible shock. You need time to recover, then see about the facts of what happened.

Very best wishes to you and your family.

Brian - that's awful!!!
You would have thought they would have the procedure 'off pat' by now!
I'm so glad to hear your daughters okay - but disgusted by the department's procedures.
