Sore mouth due to chemotherapy

Does anyone have a good remedy for this? I have 2 more sessions to go and each time the symptons for this are more severe . I can cope with the hair loss & sickness but not being able to eat most things isn't very nice, the doctor has prescribed various mouth washes but they haven't really helped very much.
I've also tried things from the chemist.

Hello Anne... they gave me a morphine based medicine, in a syringe, a couple of times a day.... my entire gullet was burned from the chemo I had... and I had no saliva... so if that is a problem, you can also get artificial saliva, as well.... best thing I found to eat was soups and pureed food..... or icelollies,

I would give you the details... but am being whizzed back into hospital with a temperature spike, lol!!

Take care.... and INSIST that you get something that will help, sometimes we just sit back and take what is being thrown at us!!

Good luck and loads of (((((((((hugs))))))))

Dear Berkshire Anne

Good Evening to you.

Could you talk to one of the nurses on the cancerbacup helpline for advice?

They could recommend what you could do or
suggest what you could ask the Doctor for:

0808 800 1234

The helpline is open:

Monday to Friday

9-00am to 8-00pm

The call is free of charge.

All calls are confidential. They can provide info booklets, etc.

I really hope you can find something to help as soon as possible.

This is the best I can find for you at the moment.

With very best wishes.
x

BA
In the hospital pharmacy where I worked there was Glandosane spray and Salivix tablets for artificial saliva.

Mouth wash or spray (for pain) initially Difflam was used.

A good one in a sachet was Gelclair this was used on the ward for terminally ill cancer patients.

There is also Fentanyl lozenge (strong pain killer)

Speak to your GP or Oncologist.

Best wishes
Pat

Our daughter went through chemo for Hodgkin's on two weekly sessions for six months in 2005 . She found crushed ice sludge helped plus she was also told about pineapple by the hospital Unfortunately she doesnt like it so that was a no go but she did find the ice crush very helpful plus she had a mouthwash too that seemed to help[. She found the Hospital very helpful with suggestions when she had various problems immediately after each chemo session.
Good Luck
Shirley

My SIL was told to eat crushed pineapple as it was the best cleanser for the mouth. The hospital told him. So we bought tins of it . It worked.

Hiya Anne, I hope your mouth is feeling better now, and that you have spoken to your oncologist or GP... I forgot about the pineapple, as I couldn't have it on the last phase of chemo... my chemo effectively burned my entire intestinal tract, and the pineapple upset my tummy badly... shame really, as it was also the only food I actually fancied trying to eat, lol!! Hence the morphine *swallow*

The morphine based stuff was administered via oral syringe, and I had to swish it around before swallowing... the relief was fabulous!! I also had some rasberry stuff... best cold, served the same way, but that didn't do much!!

If you use Difflam... which was good for the ulcers and sores in my mouth in the chemo before... be careful not to chew on your cheek, as I did... just causes more ulcers!! You don't feel it cos your mouth is a bit numb! But I did find it ok for the first two phases of chemo, and I was eating pineapple as well... my favourite fruit apart from grapes, and I wasn't allowed them!!

Good luck, and take care.

Love

Daff xxxx

Edit: I couldn't suck the lozenges the third course... the saliva stuff worked a bit, but not for long enough to suck anything that was dry... but if your saliva is unaffected, then you should be able to manage them, and they are pretty good, too... I tried them the first course of treatment, but hated the taste even though they did the job. xxxxxx

Thank you everyone for your help and support, I visited my GP today and he has subscribed antibiotic lozenges plus I have a fasting blood test tomorrow morning.
Tonight instead of my main meal I will be having complan through a straw.
