tin pre decimal currency the farthing had a wren on the reverse, a penny brittania , threpence (designed so i could get them out of my grandads hand witha spanner) a portcullis .
what as the memory escapes me was on the back of sixpence , shilling , 2 shillings , 2/6,
!0 shilling notes were brown, pound notes green , 5 pound notes
white or did they change colour

A sixpence has the four flowers of Britain, England- rose, Ireland- clover, thistle- Scotland and leek -Wales. Each flower has a leaf inbetween it and the next one.

A shilling has a lion stood on a crown.

The two shilling has the rose on a stem in the middle, with a crown on top, and a thistle on the left and a clover on the right.

Ah! but carol was that the English shilling? or the scottish one? LOL

the 2shillings was 4 thistles and also on another 2 shilling
was a crown sat on a rose with a thistle one side and a (like a club on a pack of cards )on the other side sorry that is the only way i can describe it

The half crown 2/6pence had a Shield and Crown....I have got one !!

I am looking at an English shilling 1929, two shilling 1942 and a 1953 sixpence.
I used to save them as before a certain date (which I forget now) they had a higher silver content, and so you could sell them for more than those dated after this time ( what ever it is) lol

I can remember all the coins but couldn't have told you what was on them, not without looking anyway!

Oh Sue, you've brought back some memories there....I used to dread long division, ie when we had to divide something like £13.17s.6d by £2.12s.2d......it used to take up the whole page of an excercise book!!

Leek got left out when it came to Canada -- we had much English, Scottish and Irish immigration, but not much Welsh, I guess.

I was just regaling someone elsewhere with the song everyone knew back in the 50s, but that hasn't been heard for some time now, given how it kind of excluded the French-Canadian and First Nations contribution to the deal and all.
