Try looking in Waitrose, they do stock a lot of the old things.

I was in bed with a cold type affliction yesterday when a friend came in from Morrisons with some tapioca.I am assuming it is dried but hve not been downstairs yet to see.

Julia Report 22 May 2009 14:25

I went to Morrisons today as I said I would, on the hunt for the puddings of childhood. Only managed to get a tin of Ambrosia Creamed Tapioca. Asked the assistant walking past where the dried pudding ingredients were and she looked in awe, as she didn't know what I was talking about. I managed to find some dried rice, but no flaked. Yesterday I was in Tesco, and managed to get a tin of Creamy Semolina. I will eat the Semolina with a dollop of jam in, but the Tapioca I'll put in a buttered dish with slivers of butter on top to form a burnt skin.
Thanks to all for bringing the memories of these puddings back.

Yes,this baby had it.

Looked up the recipe on the internet.A bit of a fiddle for something that doesn't keep.Lakeland do one I believe, much less fiddle.

Once,at school,we had rice pudding with rose-hip syrup on it.

That is something you don't seem to see any more,Delrosa.I used to love it.Wonder of you could make it.

Sharron Report 21 May 2009 10:26

Scientists should be working on a way to make a milk pudding that is mostly skin and burnt bits.

That rice bit in the middle is alright but it is the brown bits that you really want.

I make bread and butter pudding but am not very keen on the burnt bits of fruit that you can't really avoid. This is not to say I don't eat the burnt bits of fruit,I just am none too keen on them.

Sharron Report 21 May 2009 10:05

I have had both in tins, and semolina, but I want the real thing, dirty great dollops of it too.

You don't get the cooking smell from a tin,or the smell of the burnt milk which I invariably drop on the hob.

I think the last time I bought sago and tapioca they were Whitworth's.

I will try to get to Budgen's tomorrow. They may have it,they seem to be the the place for anything a bit obscure.

I am so looking forward now to going to Morrisons tomorrow for the sago and tapioca, just to see if I can get it. I do not know if they sell it dried, but I am sure I have seen it in Ambrosia tins. Cheese sauce granuels are usually found near the DRUMS of Parsley sauce etc. near the gravy granuels. Very handy to have in.
Will tell you all tomorrow how I get on

Blast, I knew there was something when I was in Sainsbury's yesterday - went there with my son as we don't have one this side of the city. I was so pleased when I asked a lad if they had the cheese sauce granules and he found some, that I completely forgot those packets of sago.
I haven't been able to get the cheese sauce granules for more than a year or so, they are so handy to make up for a moist topping for pasta when you are in a rush.

The lad in Tesco thought sago was a herb when OH asked if they stocked it.

I have not seen pudding rice either (Carolina rice I believe it was properly called, long grain was Patna) so have to make it with long-grain.

I wouldn't put golden syrup in anything apart from the bin.The idea of a syrup tart makes me gag!

Sharron, I found flaked rice in Tesco a couple of weeks ago. It was on the shelf with the jellies and angel delight type puddings. I searched around for 5 mins and had to ask in the end. I didn't notice if sago and tapioca were there too, but you never know.

Morrisons then. Doesn't mean they are going to stock them down here.

I will have to go to Bognor. What a treat that will be!

Deana - My fourth baby, a prem. and a caeser, was fed on diluted Carnation Milk. She was a little devil for the projectile vomiting. Now made a lovely bonnie lass. Only the other week in conversation with her, she said she prefered Carnation Milk to Cream. I told her it was all I could get down her. She couldn't believe it, and we had never discussed this before.
As an aside, I am sure I have bought flaked rice at sometime or another, but can't remember what for except pudding

When i go to Morrisons on Friday, I am going to get both Sago and Tapioca. I already use dried butter beans, particularly in my soups and stews. Very nourishing. I am fastly going off the few processed foods I do eat, and am reverting back to my childhood. Em, em, food only that is

'Weigh out' shops do all of the above, as do many small health food/deli's.

I used to eat other kids sago, rice pud etc at school ...in exchange for them having my prunes, or meat :)
