Blue Moon

Blue Moon Report 30 May 2009 07:49

I had the same email this morning

essentials £41.70/year*
Normally £83.40

perminum £53.70/year*
Normally £107.40

worldwide £77.70/year*
Normally £155.40

Jean Durant

Jean Durant Report 30 May 2009 07:52

Now that's not fair. I renewed in March and had to pay £107.40 to upgrade from essentials to premium.

Next time I will negotiate.

Thats the one BlueMoon

Jean that happens so often doesn't it ? just as you pay your renewal they come up with an offer. Mind not normally one this good I wonder if because you upgraded if you could now get world wide out of them ?

Blue Moon

Blue Moon Report 30 May 2009 08:03

my membership ran out a few months ago,i thought this might be a " come back " offer.

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 30 May 2009 08:10

I have never purchased a membership so it seems its a random email of come and join us, unfair to the members who have paid full price but that seems to happen often when they are on a member recruiting spree.

if you go through quidco (a cash back site) it is offering 25% off purchases, so you maybe be able to combine the two offers.

Pahhhhhh!!

Mind it might be alot cheaper normally if people didnt overley exploit the use of its site.

Joy

Joy Report 30 May 2009 08:43

Thank you; but ours is due for renewal in the autumn.

Jean Durant

Jean Durant Report 30 May 2009 08:56

I don't know why I'm moaning.... I still think it is cheap.

I must visit Ancestry at least once every day, and sometimes a lot more, and all it costs me is £2 a week.

I've got my tree on there and have had quite a few contacts and through it I am in touch with 2 first cousins I had lost contact with.

Where else could I get such enjoyment for £2 a week :)

Jean x.

Edit : It's so much cheaper than the FMP rip-off of the 1911 census.

Joy

Joy Report 30 May 2009 09:09

Am not moaning either, Jean :-)
I traced someone's life there from 1851 to 1901 very happily the other day :-)

And, yes, the 1911 site is a rip-off and far less easy to use than when the 1901 came out. I posted rather crossly yesterday on the 1911 census blog.

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 30 May 2009 09:11

Jean true it's cheaper than the FMP and when put the way you have it doesn't sound too bad.
Although I do think for some full membership is out of reach normally and you can register and still get contacts from the community side of it.

Kay a nice thought that it could be cheaper normally, not sure what you mean with the overly exploit. but some how I can't see them lowering their prices when they can do offers like this to increase membership.

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 30 May 2009 09:16

That is annoying, I couldn't do without it, but even though I have had continuous membership for years, I got no special offer when I upgraded to worldwide a couple of months ago.
It is annoying that they offer these things to non members, but don't reward the loyalty of long standing members.
I have FMP as well, but at least they do reward members on with a lower rate on renewal

Uzzi~~~~

Look how many would maybe become paying members of Ancestry if they didnt just get their whole tree plopped in front of their screen,half of which they have no idea where it has come from :}}}
Membership on Anc may possilby slightly cheaper if they didnt lose income by people not joining because they dont have to>

Everyone should experience the joy of doing their own research from time to time, even if it means paying for it.

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 30 May 2009 09:46

I have just sent an email to them asking for a refund for half my subscription, or a six months extension, but I know that I won't get it.

Kay,while it is true that they lose income form people doing look ups on her, it is also true that a large number of people end up joining Ancestry because having got help on here to start their research, they realise the benefits of joining. I would think that Ancestry gain lots of members in this way

thank you for that, will tell my friend who is just starting out. is it just through the normal site, or is there a special code that you have to use?
I renewed thru Quidco and did eventually get the discount back, so it's well worth doing that way.

I know what you mean Kay, there are several people on Records who have been regularly asking for lookups for 2 years +

NOTE & I do mean lookups; everyone should be able to ask for help when ever it's needed
