people are buying monkeys coz they dont or cant have children they dress then push them in prams and keep them like real babies!!!

No this isn't right it's ridiculous.There are plenty of children(human) that desperately need a family.Is it in America?

No, the RSPCA and other animal welfare organisations say that monkeys do not make good pets - not at all.

I couldn't bear children - as in giving birth to them - so we adopted. I ask myself, why don't these people make enquiries about adoption? Or, if for any reason they're not suitable, perhaps adopt a dog or cat. If they have allergies, there are dogs that don't shed their fur.

cant see that the RSPCA will be pleased in years to come with all the monkeys that end up in their care

don't think the kind of folk that are willing to do this should be allowed to adopt children, come on they are not playing with a full deck.

There was a programme once about people who bought really expensive life like dolls and treated them like real kids, pushing them about in the pram, buying designer clothes for them etc.

I thought that was sad, but this is even worse !

Apart from being pretty much cruel to the monkey (not even giving it any chance of monkey normality even if this has to be a wildlife park or zoo where they interact with their own kind) It makes me feel uncomfortable that these people really believe their monkey is really their son or daughter and treat them as such. Bear in mind this is a son or daughter who will never get past the baby stage. and should anything happen to the "parents" will end up having to either be put to sleep or stuck in a zoo in an environment they will not understand

OK people keep cats or dogs and love them like they are a child, but they dont dress them up each day to make them more human.

Can monkeys be potty-trained, or do they have to be changed all their lives?

I always wanted a monkey as a pet, not I hasten to add as a substitude child. but as a pet .
I did know somebody with monkeys and was horrified by what he told me (they can be quite nasty ) . But I also knew somebody ( a pet shop owner ) with a beautiiful little barrel organ monkey when I was a child.

I do think though that unless you are childless and adoption is not an option it can't be known what thoughts go through that persons mind. Even then each person is different as to how they react to being infertile.

I don't and wouldn't have a monkey to treat as a child but I do have 2 very spoilt dogs.

keeping a monkey as a pet is so different to keeping it as a child ...cant be good for its "real" way of life ....

Thanks CM, have just seen them. Although I don't doubt these peoples' love and affection for these animals, they are wild animals instinctively, and as such should be in their natural habitat. The people should remember that animals have built-in instincts, which cannot be changed.

Uzzi, I see your point. However, my OH and I were told that we might be too old to adopt (we were in our 40's at the time), and although I was so upset, I wouldn't have dreamed of having a monkey as a substitute.

Sooner or later, these people are going to regret their actions. And who will bear the brunt of the blame? The animal, as usual. I just hope these people don't let any children near them.

Berona monkeys can be potty trained.

Kemp I am not really sure if keeping one as a pet is fair as they are a family orientated animal. They can and are very loving to humans and often if the mother rejects are reared by humans. The problem with humans adopting unless you are Tarzan then they are denied their natural childhood play with friends.
