I have a ear infection and it's driving me round the bend. Also lower lip on same side has gone numb - according to doc its all part of ear infection. Went to Docs on Wednesday pm, have been given antibiotics - and am taken painkillers - finding it hard to sleep - I do doxe of on sofa for a while - find it better sitting up.

Any ideas on how long before the antibiotics take to kick in? Only been on them since Wed night?

If it doesn't show signs of improvement, Elizabeth, go back to the doctor. Antibiotics should fix it, and if not, they might need to be changed.
I sympathise with you. Ear infection is a terrible condition to have.

Berona - trying to get appointment for today, but typicaly the docs computer system has crashed, have to ring at 2pm, and hope to get appointment then, Think I'd feel better - if the pain subsides, and I can get some decent sleep.

Tinky - hope you get your wax sorted - thats not good either is it?

Hi Elizabeth, have you tried the old fashioned method of wrapping a hot water botlte in a towel, and resting your head on this. I have suffered with my ears all my life and find that old, tried and tested methods do work. Of course, it won't cure the problem, but will ease the pain, hope you feel better soon when your medicine kicks in. Luv Nina

do either of you ladies use ear pieces in your ears -eg listening to music -ipods etc , or typists and have headphones or men with ear protectors eg working on building sites-these things are causing ear problems just now

Have we heard back from Elizabeth after her appointment with the GP.?
I have just read this thread and would suggest that she goes to the emergency department. It sounds as though she has inflammation and swelling inside the ear which is causing the numbness to the lip area. She may need stronger painkillers as Kemp says or even antibiotic drops or dteroids. At the A&E department an ENT specialist could see her and advise.
I'm not an advocate for taking up A&E time BUT it is Friday night.
Best wishes to Elizabeth

been to docs,
Apparently the ear infection has "travelled" down and caused a tooth infection as well.
He has given me another lot of antibiotics to take along with the ones for theear infection - now on two antibotics
and he has given me co codemal (sp?) for painkillers,
I had been taken paramol which t he chemist had given me - but did not work all that well.

Nina, had forgotten the hottie bottle treatmen - dont have one at mo - but will def remember that one.

Hope everyone gets their ear problems sorted -
would not wish on anyone.

Forgot my manners - thanks for all your messages, Appreciated.

Joan, I would have gone to A & E if I couldnt get to docs, like u dont like taking up time - but think i might have done, just to get some relief.

As for the consequences - husband better steer clear of loo - thats all i will say LOL

Elizabeth: Out of curiosity... do you use earphones? In your job or domestically? Had a friend who, after using them during a pubic conference for a couple of weeks developed a fungus infection in the ear which became really painful. Apparently said earphones were only disinfected once a year!
Worth checking out, maybe. Just a suggestion....

Jan and Rosalyn
Meant to say about headphones - do not use at work - but do use mp3 player some times - had not given them a thought!!!
Jan as for the thought of them being cleaned once a year - ugh -

ear pieces or earphones push the wax in as do cotton buds, men on buiding sites sometimes have moulds fitted in their ears but I once had a man with black wax -it was coal dust !
