Good evening all. My gx3 grandfather was born c 1839 in Germany, on all census records that I can find it is stated that he was a British Subject, what does this mean and how do I go about getting his birth certificate. |

Although he was born in Germany, his father was a British subject and so he passed on his citizenship rights to his child. Just like today. (Mothers could not pass on rights back then, of course.) |

There is a possibility that he may have been born on an army base thereby getting British status. |

My Gt Grandfather was born in France British subject, I have never been able to find his birth certificate, he doesn't seem to have been registered at GRO. And I am sure his father must have died in France as well because there is no trace of him in England and his wife re-married as a widow. |
