and his wallet with cards and money stolen... he is probably in Portugal... anyone know how we can get hold of Portugese police to try and find him? The number we have isn't responding.

I will be back to check for any replies, but am busy googling.

He is 76, and went *overland* on Wednesday... he phoned my mother, who has dementia, using a borrowed phone... she was told to cancel his cards, but we have no idea who he banks with... very secretive, my dad!!

But, he is stuck somewhere in Portugal (probably Albuifaira area, as he knows it well) with no money, no ticket home, and we are going to kill him when we get him back!!

Edit SORTED..... HE'S IN SPAIN!!

Can you get to your Mother's and look for documentation concerning the travel agent's he used in England. They should have his address in Portugal.

Unless they have joint accounts your mother wouldn't have been able to close his account anyway. He should be ok if he had card protection.

Berona Report 13 Jun 2009 12:31

You can't do much unless he rings again and gives you the information. I hope he has gone to the British embassy - or through the local police to the embassy. They will get him home, but you can't cancel his cards until you know who supplied them.

Just a thought. Would the travel agent be able to tell you the name of the card supplier - which he may have used to pay his fare.?

Hello all... and thank you Sue M for the phone call!!

My father keeps all his banking details close to his chest... locks them away no less!! As you have said, we can't close his account even if we knew which bank or building society he was with!! My parents have never had a joint account.

The police here say that they can't do anything unless they know where he is... then they could contact Portugese police with the details.

But my dad knows enough Portugese, and some folk there, as he is a regular visitor and worked there for a number of years... I think he will be able to sort it out, but he just wanted to get his cards stopped so they couldn't be used.

I am about to phone the British Embassy to find out if they have any numbers.

If dad is actually in Portugal, then I know he will be safe... but we are not sure if he had reached there!!!

Daff xxxxx

The numbers I have for the British Embassy in both Portimao and Lisbon are not being recognised... I have checked the codes and think I have it right

I am much calmer now....

Daff, think back, has your Dad ever given you a cheque? If so maybe you can remember what bank it was on. Have you or your sisters managed to get over to his house to see if you can find anything? Is he driving a car? Do you know the number? maybe the police could trace him through that.

And you thought children were a pain

MrDaff Report 13 Jun 2009 13:11

Lol Ann...... nope, the parents are by far the biggest pain, lol!!

Panic now over.

He has phoned again.... he is in Spain, and hadn't got to Portugal. His hotel, where he stayed last night, is now paid for until Monday, and there is a ferry then that will take him to Portsmouth... I have just finished sorting and paying for all that!!

He had his wallet nicked as he was drawing out cash at the cash point... but he still had some in his bum bag, and had divided what he had withdrawn into two, just in case this very thing ever happened, so has some cash, and I'm about to try and find out how to get some more to him.

He is in Santander, wherever in Spain that is!!

He is definitely going to be grounded when he gets home!!

Thank you everyone for your concern, and ideas.

Hi Daff
Hope things have been sorted for your dad,and that he's okay.

It's always wise to 'share' cash around your person/bags etc. as your dad had done, too many scumbags ready to dip! here and abroad!

Oh Daff, thank goodness it has been sorted. Poor Dad..tsk tsk...I was in Santander once but just passing through on my way up north. If all else fails, Western Union might be helpful. BCXX

Well that is a relief Daff. And a lesson for him to be wary of cash points. cost him a fortune too to draw money abroad doesn't it? glad he is OK anyway, and why did he phone your Mum in the first place and not you, he knows she is confused. I suppose he couldn't remember your number. Have you got his bank though to cancel his cards?

Daff

Santander is at the top of Spain and one of the main ferry ports back to the UK. Glad to hear you have got things somewhat sorted out now.
If he had a ferry booked hopefully the ferry line will sort something out for you so you only have to pay for the ferry change.

OMG Daff!! What a worry for you. That'll be him on reins from now on lol

Hope he gets home safely, but shows how aware he was of the possibility of this happening. Wonder how many other people would think to split the money.

Hope you are feeling well.

Well, it is all sorted, more or less... he was travelling on to Portugal... and had arrived in Santander last night.... he is coming back on Monday now... he had only booked one way, that tends to be the way he travels... he is a bit of a worry!!

He didn't phone me because he didn't want to worry me, and he couldn't remember the others' phone numbers... they all changed their numbers a little while ago, but mine stayed the same. He usually remembers all numbers, but in the panic, he couldn't. So he phoned my mum, the idiot!

But he now has enough money to last until Monday at least, a ferry home, his train ticket has been found, and so he has ambled off all serene to have his meal and a couple of glasses of wine!!

My mum and two sisters have been around, and we had lunch together, while we talked of all the horrible things we would do to him when he gets back. Very therapeutic it was, too!

Thank you everyone for your care and concern... and yep, Sue, bring 'em, and we'll threaten him with them, lol!!

Love

Daff xxxx
