Charles Johnson Carter b1873, Leonard Carter b1870, and maybe John H Carter b1869, all born in Ellerby, Yorkshire, emigrated to Australia in 1887. John and Leonard settled in Stawell, Victoria.

Can anyone help with finding when and what ship they came across on, and who was with them, if anyone, as Charles (my grandfather) was 15 at the time.

3 Carters applied for passports in Aug 1886, but cannot decipher if they were my relatives.

Also, I cannot find any reference to John H in Yorkshire census except when young.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Try a site called Ozships. Also google (1)immigration to Australia 1887 and (2)Victoria BDM and I think there is an option for immigration info there.

Would you like me to go back further for you Neville or are you sorted?

Neville Report 24 Jun 2009 01:45

Thanks for help. Its a mystery where they were in 1881. I had assumed they may have moved closer to where they departed the UK, hence search for departure.

Charles (the Father) parents were Thomas Carter (1794 Little Hatfield) and Susannah Hodge (1806 Aldbrough to 10 1849 Hull) who had 8 children, all born Burton Pidsea except for 1 at Ellerby. Marriage was 6 June 1826 at Burton Pidsea.

I have traced Charles, Isaac and William lines to Australia.

I will try Oz Ships and BDM as suggested. Will let you know results.

I cannot get any further back than this. Its a good hobby and I am still learning where to get information.

Found Family emigrated together except George who became a Policeman in Hull, Got him also in 1911 Census. Used nick names which slowed me down for a bit. This is from Link posted above.
Now, who is Jas N Carter is next to find, never has cropped up before.

Christine, Many thanks for all your help.

Can we get Thomas's parents?
I have got Susannah Hodge's.

Edit
How do you search for this data? I had a difficult time finding the original 1841 census you found. I would never have found that info without your help.

cheers

This info was on family search

seach for charles carter 1833
look for birthplace

at bottom of page is ref C108801
click on it and a new search page comes up

enter fathers name and mothers first name and all their children born in that parish will appear

the trick on find my past is to use different search criteria

sometimes I might put no name but just the village. good for finding mistranscribed families
