Never got any pocket money off mum and dad but every Friday dad would get us a bar of choccy and a packet of Opal Fruits and an Arrow Bar.

Nan and granddad bought us a comic and 3d every Friday as well.

Best treat was from my gr. nan on Saturday afternoon.... we got a twist of sweets and 2d plus a chocolate biscuit and a glass of home made lemonade, she said it was home made any way.

I didn't get pocket money either, we used to work to get any cash.............either helping with jobs around the farm or babysitting the farmers children.

We used to get one comic a week and a bag of sweets between us on a friday............anything else had to be worked for.

Moonchild, how I remmber it well. Yes it was stockings in those days. I worked in the Accounts Dept of a well known hosiery manufacturer. We were allowed an allowence of stocking per month at a discount. It was the occassional Benson and Hedges for me, and my 63rd comes up in October.
Following on from my previous posting, whilst I was out watering just now, I remembered that my sister, six years older than myself, went to be a nurse at Nottingham General Hospital when she ws 18 yrs. Before she went, dad, a carpenter, made her a small wooden box, to lock her valuables up in, and stained it. It was beautiful. But in the year preceeding her leaving home, mum saved for her to have 2 winter coats made, and have two pairs of winter shoes, as well as a pair of sensible 'ward' shoes.

Rich, yes........looking back I think we must have been, not in monetory terms, but in the way life was then.......with both parents working after only Mums wage coming in for over 18 months, and wages and jobs plenty.......working it out properly I would have been 10 1/2 so it was 1956/7........Macmillen I think......we've never had it so good......

.....but as you say Marilyn, it was not so good for us all it seems, and some must have had harsher times and not looked back through rose coloured spectacles, like I seem to be doing.....

Hope you get plenty of ice creams now.......you deserve them..... :0))))
