I have seen lots on hear talking about their cyber farms, but how many people still grow things in their own garden that they can actually eat?

When my children were young, I grew lots of my own vegetables. Now it is just tomatoes & peppers in the greenhouse.

As a child, growing up in the Sussex countryside I remember every garden full of vegetables. Straight rows of runner beans & peas, mounds of potatoes where carefully tended. We had apple trees, gooseberries, raspberries, strawberries & rhubarb. Dad would come home from working all day on the farm, eat his tea & go out to hoe or plant.

The chicken were given the weeds & all the outsides of cabbages etc. this & handfulls of corn meant we always had fresh eggs.

It is hard work but I do think that there is something very rewarding in putting something on your table that you have actually grown.

I have yet to buy any veg from a supermarket that has the taste of anything grown in a garden. If you grow it yourself you also know that it has not been sprayed with chemicals & that it has not absorbed others from the ground.

If I want a tomato, I just walk out to the greenhouse, cannot get fresher than that

I have always grown runner beans, but have 'experimented' this year with carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, squash and peppers. All looking good so far!

Just moved and really lucky that there are potatoes already growing well in garden, also parsley, mint and sage and an apple tree (Bramleys I am told ) . have a big bag of seed to sort out, usually plant lettuce, spinach and spring onions at least :))

Nothing beats the taste of potatoes from the garden :))

New potatoes freshly dug & cooked with fresh with fresh mint ... mmm

I am growing 4 different types of tomato this year, usually just grow 2 high cropping & 2 of the small sweet ones. Am trying beefsteak & plum. Herbs in an old sink.

One of my friends grows sugar snap peas in a hanging basket, might try that next year.

Tomatoes
I grow them in large pots in my greenhouse ... find them easier to keep moist in hot weather

I pinch out all side shoots until I have 3 pairs of leaves, then leave & wait for flowers ... still pinch out any other side growth. + start feeding with Tomorite

Some varieties crop earlier than others.

Good luck hope you get a good crop

We have an allotment,so grow all sorts. last week my fingers were stained yellow by the turmeric, when I was making a vat of piccalilli to use up the cauli's.
I have spent most of the afternoon picking raspberries and blackcurrants, so will be spending the rest of the day making jam. No doubt my fingers will be purple by the time I have prepared all the blackcurrants.Still it is worth it, because it tastes so good,. unfortunately there are still zillions of the little blighters still to pick.
