Try the scanner first with a picture from say a magazine .you can then see if its working Ok .
I did this several times to find the right settings before i did the photos as some are a bit fragile

I've got a mac but I take your point. It is a very good point too. :)

I think I have but my memory is awful so I may be mistaken. I'll try and check it out. Thanks very much for your help. It is appreciated.

just one thought, have you used the scanner with the PC you intend to scan the photos to?

i ask because the scanner i used on my old XP PC would not work on the vista one and there were no updated drivers so i had to get a new one :)

i use 300 dpi if the photo is being scanned for printing and restoring work :)

I've already got a scanner. I've had it for a number of years and haven't used it in a long time.

After reading Joys thread a few weeks ago about finding info from family photographs as well as brushing them up. I am interested in scanning the rest of my photographs in but am wondering what is the best resolution to use and whether I need a new scanner.

Can anyone help?
