Alyson. Report 23 Jul 2009 23:27

My Daughter in Law works for a ladies clothing chain and 2 of her colleagues have been sent home today with symptoms. One has been confirmed as having Swine Flu. Tonight my DIL has started symptoms. My other Daughter in Law works in a creche and a child there has also been confirmed with Swine flu.

Seems to be spreading like wild fire. I would prefer to have it now as i am going on holidays in 5 weeks.

Deb Vancouver (18665) Report 23 Jul 2009 23:09

I was reading in our paper this morning that a man from Quebec has died of the swine flu.
Apparently he was given Tamiflu after his son contacted it.
He became ill and died.
It has been discovered that the strain oh H1N1 he had is drug resistant.

The WHO is asking school boards to consider plans to close schools if the pandemic worsens.

Don't forget. The flu of 1918 was mild in it's first round.
It was the second and third round that killed 50 million people.

By the way, I'm not worried about it at all. If I'm going to get it, I'm going to get it.

Daisy, I do hope your neighbours baby and toddler are OK. I don't think anyone is being flippant, just a way of dealing with it and with the media hype. We do appreciate that for little ones it can be dangerous and worrying. Actually another aspect with little ones, the meningitis trust< I think it was them, were concerned that with everyone watching for swine flu, somebody might miss the symptoms of meningitis.

Daisy,

So sorry to hear that your neighbour's three month old baby is seriously ill, but babies have a way of bouncing back in no time as breast milk is the wonder drug that helps them thrive.

Your right there - only 700 reported deaths from swine flu worldwide so far around 0.4% of the reported cases.

So the odds look pretty good really

Daisy Report 23 Jul 2009 21:10

Please don't be quite so flippant about this. My neighbours were diagnosed last week. They were treated and are fine but their 3 month old baby is now seriously ill. Unfortunately babies cannot be treated with Tamiflu yet. The parents are desperate as they have another young child of 3 with symptoms.

Two more people have been killed in road accidents here in Colchester this week, god knows how many have been injured, 3500 are killed every year in car accidents, we have become imune to this fact, hoe many times have you had the flu and survived, this is no different.

Hello Elaine, I'm sorry to hear how you're feeling.

Try not to worry so much.

In 3 weeks time, you'll be away on your hols and all this will be forgotten. Hope you all enjoy yourselves.

Take care xx

I'm at fault for worrying about it :o((((

I just cant help the way i feel, Im really worried about my kids getting it and dying. I cant even get excited about my holiday in over 3 weeks because Im convincing myself one of us will get the blooming thing just before we fly :o(((

I accept that most of the way im feeling is due to having panic attacks (which I dont ralise Im actually having but am on meds for)

Im trying to be positive buts its so hard with all the media hype of it all.

With the hundreds of radio stations , tv stations and magazines, to fill all these pages and air time, lots of news is now being blown out of proportion , so I am afraid it is now a fact of modern life that what used to be no news or small news is always going to be hyped up .

LancsLass

LancsLass Report 23 Jul 2009 20:25

Im at home with it now according to my doctor. Im laid in my bed and have been all day, sleeping on and off, drinking water and taking Tamiflu & painkillers. I have asthma so doc wanted to make sure.

To be honest if it wasnt for media hype I would have treated it as a bad cold, dosed myself up with paracetamol and may have gone to work, although today i wouldnt have done as I felt rotten this morning.

My son who is 9 said Have you got swine flu mum, then you need to wash your hands lots!

So telly information isnt such a bad thing after all

I know what you mean BUT the worry is that it's happening in the summer - which is not normal - and tends to "pick on" the younger people, which again is not normal ...

Kitty - your description reminds me of the last hangover I had! )))))

Well folks, in my opinion - this Swine Flu will be worse before its better - so dont discount it, just make sure you stay as healthy as you possibly can and those who are most at risk take whatever measures are available to them to help keep it at bay.

If Swine flu was called say Strain 442 or something, nothing would be in the press anyway.

I had Hong Kong flu in the sixties and was really poorly for ages, no-one with 'flu is well enough to get to their surgery anyway, getting to the bathroom was a marathon effort made less dangerous by clinging onto the walls for support as the world spun around me:(
