Blue Moon Report 5 Aug 2009 05:13

My OH can be a right mard arse if he doesn't get his own way.

it's sad but I think a lot of the local words are dying out ,
words I used when I was a child are rarely used now,
My OH moved to this area when he was 4 years old but if I said to him........

look at that lad cruddling down behind that midden,
he's got bletch all over his legs,if he's not careful he'll slip over and end up scrawping his knees then he'll run home squarking causing a load of mither

he'd look at me like I came from Mars.

I use the word crabby as well, but I'd never heard of 'crabbit' until SIL used it.

My S-I-L uses the word 'Crabbit' which I think means something similar.

The word "mard" was sometimes used in my Cheshire/Lancs environments! Sort of in a context if you complained you was cold, "oh stop being so mard!). Seems to be a north of England expression.

Mardy is used in Staffs and Derbys as well.

I found this definition:

Mardy (rhymes with 'hardy') adj., n.; colloquial, dialect

Uses

'Mardy' is a word that, although extremely descriptive and very useful, is not widely known outside the Midlands region of the United Kingdom. It should be.

Because it is not widely used, 'mardy' is difficult to describe to non-users, its meaning being quite elusive. Context helps, though:

One can be a mardy cow
One can be in a mardy
And no one would want you to have a mardy on them
Definitions

Any clearer? Well, 'stroppy' would be similar, as would 'to have a strop', but it's a bit too aggressive and sulky. Mardy has much more of a whine to it. 'Tantrum' isn't really applicable, since mardies are more likely to be ignored/shoved into the corner than to cause a scene.

Yes I can be a right old mardy cow. And I'll be 42 tomorrow and I'm a Yorkie so it all fits.

But most of the time I am a very good sweet and nice little lass.
