Depends to an extent which end of the law you are - victim or accused - i guess you may have differing views depending on circumtance

Hard one Keith even being on the right side of the law I've come across good and bad in them.

and I know too many ex coppers to be over scathing of them

I think some of them forget they are here to uphold the Law
There are a few of them who think THEY are the Law

Hi

Totally agree with Keith on that one,

I live in a part one way road and the police are forever coming down it the wrong way (even though they are not ment to) but nothing seems to happen to them but people who live in the one way section has to go to the other end of the one way bit then join a very busy road and sit it traffic for ages or chance it and get a fine as their is a camera their.(which dont spot police cars )

Hi Keith,

Aren't they the same as every other occupation? As Uzzi says there are probably good and bad officers.

Also do we know enough about their work to judge them? I certainly don't.

In answer to Keith's question.....Of course they do a good job, its just that some do it better than others !

Just like any other job.

The police officers who I have come across personally seem to be doing a good job. However, people I know, who are stopped and searched at what seems like every available opportunity, might have good reason to disagree with me.

Mmm. I do see the point that you are making Rita, my brother, for instance, took it quite well when the police surrounded him at the bus stop one morning, because he answered the description (mid-twenties, fair haired, carrying a hold-all) of an armed man that they were looking for. However, friends who are stopped for little better reason than being black, having dreadlocks, etc. do rather lose patience over the years.

As a lot of people say,6 of one half a dozen of the other. It was always in this Country" Policing By Concent" now I think not, there is to much Empire Building and to much interference by Government..to enable them to do the job properly. And sadly not many trust them now.**M**.

I was a police officer for a very short time way back (didnt have the patience to deal with gutter life or the desire to spend most of my time filling in paperwork). The people I met in the job were pretty much the cross selection you find in any walk of life. Lots dedicated, a few lazy, the odd one or two Obnoxious ego fuelled idiots. The vast majority of officers I have come into contact with since have been professional and polite...I do think their hands are tied by political correctness and red tape...And I do think they need to remember they are collectively a police service not a police force

I assume the Military would also include 'good & bad' amongst its men & women. How do they compare, work-wise, with the bobby on the street?

Fiona aka Ruby

Fiona aka Ruby Report 17 Aug 2009 19:21

I assume that it's not the ones are in thrall to 'political correctness' - whatever that might be - who stop and search people for no particular reason.

Staffs Col

Exactly the same Dermot....the dedicated and the lazy are also present in the military perhaps not the ego fuelled idiots quite so much at least at grass roots level...officers however :-)
