Yes I watched it too, I thought it was lovely.

I think that what's brilliant with this series is that they all have a different reason for their search, and a different story to tell, and a different lesson to learn from it - just as we all do.

I found this episode absolutely fascinating... not least as both of my parents were blind (b 1926 Co. Durham ~blind at birth Miners Strike / foetal malnutrition??? & b 1929 blind in early years South London -ish possibly measles).

I've done some digging on the net and it appears that syphilis swept though the rural parts of the country in the 1920's most likely as a result of all the servicemen returning from WW1. Prior to this it has been concentrated in cities and ports etc - not surprising really.

If anyone has any further information, I would be really interested.

We get the programe on Swedish TV got to see theman about a new card as we just moved and only 5 channels at the mo .
It is very informative, but I guess with a whole band of researchers and experts it always seems to be a bit to easy. brickwalls crumble to dust on this programme

I loved it..............the church his grandfather played the organ in is 2 minutes away from where my Grandparents lived and where my sister was married.

a friend of my daughters spits when she sees one magpie - I'd hate to sit in her car!

everytime my dad sees a magpie he says ah good morning captain or what ever time of day it is at the time and salutes it!!

...one for sorrow etc.
I found myself saying 'Hello Mr Magpie, how's Mrs Magpie' - and I'm not superstitious.

Did anyone notice that, when Martin was in a car - on his way to his brother and driving to Kent - a single magpie was in the road!
Didn't know all that about syphillis - none in my family that I've found so far!!

I can only imagine, Mau. One of those coincidences that really can make your blood run cold, I guess.

Talk of Walter Raleigh, the wily old sea dog, brings back memories of Blackadder!!!

father probably , or maybe that wiley old seadog Walter who i'm sure it was kept on QT.
She was in her maidenhood a stunning woman , till she had all those wooden teeth put in and suffered from aloprecia and meglomania .
