Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 22 Dec 2009 04:48

Hi everyone, you will usually find me late at night till the wee small hours, or dawn in summer, catching up with everyone's days. I hope I don't make anyone feel unwelcome, been here for almost 5 years now.

Hi Donna, glad to see you are going to join us again, give Meg a hug for me, and Dave too if you like lol

Hi Ann and everyone

What a lovely thread this is turning out to be!!

I didn't introduce myself properly when I posted last time.

As I said, I've been a member of GR since 2003. I have met several people on here on the threads over that time .............. and I guess, also have the little circle that meets over on TTF or in just searching.

I took early retirement in 2000, previous to that I had worked for 30 years inside at the university Botanical Garden here in Vancouver. I kept the records. We bought a new computer in 2003, got internet ..... and here I landed!

I'm Lancashire born and bred and OH is from Cheshire, but we left the UK in 1967, 3 days after our wedding, spent a year in Austin Texas, then moved upto Vancouver, BC, and never left although we did spend a year in Australia in the mid-70s.

I turn 70 in 2 weeks, have been married for 42 years, have 1 daughter who has been married for 10 years and is expecting her first baby on March 30. Unfortunately, she and her husband have lived for the whole of that time near Halifax, Nova Scotia. That is over 3000 miles away from us, it takes about 8 hours by plane ................... or the way we prefer, 5 nights and 6 days on the train! The train is fantastic!

We don't have any pets ...... I would love to have a dog or a cat but we are away too much for a dog, and OH is allergic to cat hair (unless the house is kept spotless, and I'm not that good a housekeeper!!).

Daughter has 2 cats, which are going to have their lives turned upside down in a few months.

We leave tomorrow (today now for you!) for a week away with OH's sister who lives 500 miles north of us, in a small town where she is the Anglican priest .... that means I get to go to church on Christmas Eve for a Carol Service held in a little church about 10 miles outside the town, no electricity or other services. It is heated by a wood stove and lit by candles or kerosene lanterns ...... it has seating for about 40 people but about 100 will crowd in or stand around the doors.

Merry Christmas everyone

see you about the 28 or 29 ..... likeLiz I usually post when you are all asleep!!

Little Lost Report 22 Dec 2009 06:13

I used to come on here daily but like most of you have said all the arguements and bitterness took over so I only pop in now and again. But I have to say I have been to a few meetings that were arranged by some memebers and met some really lovely people some who are very distantly related so have been able to swap info.

Hi, Ann and all, this thread reminds me of the introduction thread that someone reported and it got wooshed, I never did find out why so hope they leave this one alone....I think there are many reasons why the chat diminishes from time to time, and I have to agree the A-Zs need to be curtailed a little I used to go on them ,but after a while, its nice to share other things, I have made many lovely friends on here and you always find you are drawn to certain folk, but as Ann has said most of us are friendly and not into nasy stuff....so here I am, usually known as Just Jean, live in Lancashire,
74 years of age , still 30 in my mind although the body doesnt know that...lol...
inerests consist of crafts, mainly scrapbooks, and cards, I love crosswords and scrabble, photos are another passion too as many folk on here know, as I pester them for photos of various meets to put in a G.R. scrapbook. Ann knows all about that !! probably fed up with me now....we have some nice threads to just chat and share, always worth a look at them , if you dont like them you dont have to go on again....

Happy Christmas to you all, love Jean xx

Karen in the desert Report 22 Dec 2009 07:43

Just popped in to say "goodmorning everyone"......on this nice friendly thread. I'm glad to see it's still going despite the fact that we all must be very busy this week. The story about the mince pie baking was so good I felt I could almost smell them!! I'm ashamed to admit I haven't made my own for quite a few years, I should do it because nothing beats the smell of baking.

The good news - for me - is that my hubby has got Christmas day off this year (usually unheard of) and so, as it's just the 2 of us, we've booked to go out for our lunch. I'm looking forward to us spending the day together.

Oh, and I keep meaning to ask Julia - what part of Derbyshire are you in???

Thank you to all those who have posted since I went to bed, good to see some returning names here, you are sooo welcome and thank you Sylvia Canada for that lovely long intro. Will be back later, I have a busy day today but I will look in. Also have to check my facebook page as I have been told I have a video virus and I don't know what to do about it.

MrDaff Report 22 Dec 2009 10:21

Not me, Ann.... just got in from GP...... did you get your virus zapped???

Right..... I am Daff, married for 37 years, 2 sons, 2 beautiful granddaughters, and I live in Newport, Gwent, although I was born in Cardiff.

I get very excited over birthdays and Christmas, lol.

I love it on GR, and have made many friends, in real life, too.... I know just how generous the folk are on here... and how supportive, as I have been the recipient myself.

I get very tired at times, so often just pop in and straight out again!!

Lovely thread, Ann.... it really is good to see so many names and 'faces'

Love

Daff xxxx

Good morning, what a lovely picture postcard scene we have here today. All the fields are covered in snow, as is the rest of the area. Lovely to look at but dreading going out in it later.
I have a Wee-Jon puppy, she is a cross between a westie and a bijon freise. Pure white with beautiful dark brown eyes. She loves the snow and I have great trouble making her come indoors. Half the time all I can see are her eyes. Her name is Candy, as she was like a bundle of candy floss when we puchased her. I think the grandaughter half expected me to dye her pink. She is 7 months old now and my constant shadow. She is into everything and has already opened 2 christmas presents that I now have to rewrap before my daughter visits this morning.
She has got me through a severe bout of depression, although if you were a fly on my wall you might just send for the men in white coats. We have these wonderful one sided conversations, where she sits and looks at me as if to say, " what are you going on about lady?"
Have a lot to do today including a visit to the panto.
Hope you all enjoy your day, stay safe and keep warm.

Oh,what fun!!
going out early to go shopping before the shops get too busy, and guess what...the car wouldn't start!!All I need.
Thought it was the battery, but had the local garage up and they have taken it away!Don't know what's wrong.hope to get it back today or else we will run out of essentials.
I am a 74 year old still active(have to be with a sick husband).Live in North Wales near the coast, but quite high up a hill with lovely views and can see all the windmills out at sea, which are looking beautiful with the sunlight on them. not had much snow here, but I guess about half a mile inland it will have been quite thick.
It is nice that the gen board is getting back to normal. It was probably busier before they had chat in the format it is in now,as a lot of the folk who posted on gen went over to chat.
Will look in later.

AnninGlos Report 22 Dec 2009 12:08

You are right Brenda, a lot of people went over to chat but mainly because the gen board got swamped with A-Zs. I do hope you get your car back, is it diesel? maybe the diesel froze or something, hope it is not expensive anyway as I know you need the car.

Hi Daff, not found out how I get rid of the virus from my Facebook page, it is no problem when I receive the e mails from others on FB as I just delete them, I know people wouldn't really be inviting me to look at videos on youtube. So if anyone among my friends get them I hope they too will delete, it is quite well known now, I got them from a couple of my contacts.

Good morning SylviaG, yes the snow can look beautiful as long as you don't have to go out, so far we have not got any and I am hoping it stays that way. Have you had a new fall there overnight? Are the roads clear?

Your puppy sounds beautiful Aaah!

Busy busy then Hazel, sounds like you are well stocked up. T**** was busy yesterday but to give them their due every till (and it is a large store so a lot of tills) was 'manned' (can I say that or is it non pc?) and we were almost straight through. What a lovely OH you have to let you sit in the car while he battled the hoards.
We have visitors this evening so I wont be on here much until maybe a lot later.

JustJean Report 22 Dec 2009 16:52

You are so fortunate with little or no snow, here in gt manchester, it is severe J and D went shopping for me this morning, they went around 10, and came back finally at 2.15. only went to stores which normally takes 20 mins there and back, the trouble was the volume of traffic every road into the town was grid locked and also drivers who cause mayhem shooting through lights that are red, we have had a lot of snow, its years since it was so bad, they had trouble getting onto our car parking area when they came back, had to dig quite a lot of snow just to get onto the plot, but we have enough food now so no need to go out,not that I intended to...lol....hope it is better were you all live...
