Opinions required please on the proposed name change of our family business.
OH is the Optician.
I am optical dispensing assistant and our daughter is Manager/Dispensing Optician.
Our surname is Small and our daughter's name is Page.


The business is at present called Ray Small Optometrists.
This is a little long and many people are not sure what optometrist means. It is also cumbersome when spoken out loud.


Options are

1. keep the name as is.

2.Ray Small Opticians

3. Small Opticians

4. The Small Opticians

5. Page and Small Opticians.

6. Small Family Opticians

7. Small and Page opticians

8. Small and Family Opticians.


If you would be so kind as to give a vote taking into account how the name looks and how it sounds when answering a 'phone I would be very grateful.

I think no 7 trips off the tongue nicely and puts your OH in the first pecking order

I think you need to avoid using "Small" in the context that it indicates a small i.e. restricted, business.

Like Brian, I'd try to avoid using Small as in little.

Originally I was going to suggest
SNP Opticians until I realised SNP not only stood for Small aNd Page, but also Scotttish National Party!

Isn't an optometrist more qualified than an optician?

Too bad you feel you have to remove the word Optometrists. Shame to dumb it down.

Is it really worth the expense involved in new signs, advertising, new business cards, new domain name, etc?

Don't take this the wrong way, but it avoids using her married surname which could always change in the future. Just being practical.

This is getting interesting as some of you are realising our problem. Ray is in his fifties so may need to take a back seat at some point.

Small has a meaning and as you say also a slightly negative aspect although many of our patients like coming somewhere that does not make them feel like they are on a big conveyor belt.

Page too has a meaning and they are both short monsyllable words. The S is a difficult sybillant letter. I always introduce myself as Christine rather than Chris because of the two s sounds together.

Optometrist is the more modern title for ophthalmic optician. It means eye measurer. When you have your eyes tested at the Opticians it would be an Optometrist or an Ophalmic Medical Practioner who tests your eyes. (OMP is a Dr who does a short course specialising in eyes rather than the full training specifically as an Optometrist.).
A Dispensing Optician is qualified to dispense frame and lenses and may also specialise in contact lenses with extra training,
As an optical assistant I am qualified to dispense under supervision .


Our thinking is that Optician refers to the whole practice rather than just the one person.

We need to update our signage as it is beginning to look a little tatty and we design and print most of our own stationery. The rest can be updated as and when we need new stocks. It is more about the name of the "shop" than the name of the business, it would still be us.
We are also in the process of changing our website so it would be an ideal time to do it.

We are just debating the pros and cons, I am collecting the various responses so we can discuss it.
