Personally I have more of a problem with chuggers. Don't feel guilty about not giving, no one can afford to give to every charity.

I have one I give to regularly, others I'll stick some money in a collecting tin if I have any to spare.

What are chuggers, please?

Sorry, it's a term used for 'charity muggers', those people who accost you in the middle of the street/come knocking on your door asking you to sign up to a regular direct debit for whichever charity they're 'working' for.

My understanding is these people get paid commission and are not volunteers.

Thanks! We get a lot of them door knocking round here. They are mostly young people with loud, confident voices. They say something really daft like 'I don't know if you've heard of us' whilst they're wearing an RSPCA t shirt!

I don't sign up for any of these. We have our own chosen charity which is OXFAM. I know they have paid workers but they do go to places where I would fear to tread!

I don't have any objection to charities employing paid workers. They need to in order to keep running. However, from what I've heard about these chuggers is that they are like salesmen and earn commission on whatever people donate, via direct debit. I don't think they work for the charities directly but for another company who the charity employs to approach people, either in person or via phone. I could be wrong on that last bit though.

I do know they're a pain in the neck and it's a bit like running the gauntlet in our main shopping street when they're about.
