Our own home...steady work and income and all bills paid...with a small amount aside for the girls...for treats school trips and such like.

***cycling is great up here cos it's all so flat LOLOLOL but the roads are hazardous. Lorries are out of control here they need to do something about that ! xx

Muffy, I used to cycle a lot there, round March and out to Chatteris and the roads were great for it but I never remember seeing a bus , though I am sure there must have been some.. but public transport is a big issue, it was dire where I lived in Wales and is one of the real benefits of living here where the bus goes from near my door every half hour, or from round the corner every 12 minutes :))

I would be happy with enough to buy this house I am renting...or in fact any house in a decent area round here...I'm going to buy a lottery ticket tomorrow and pray over it... but I wouldn't buy a flash car ( any car can't drive lol) , or clothes, or a plasma tv etc...just 4 walls and a roof and enough to pay the bills would be wonderful :)

hindsight is a wonderful thing , but you do things that make sense at the time, and maybe there is a reason why when it comes down to it lol.

I must admit since I moved up here I'm far more reliant on my car than I used to be !!! Local transport IS almost non existant...maybe that should be looked at too?

Having said all that...we're surrounded by some lovely rural walks so I think I make up for my day to day laziness in using the car with long dog walks and blackberry rambles with the girls.

The Fens are a nice place to be....regardless of the current issues...I love it here...and wouldn't dream of going back to my past life x

So doesn't that tell us that these days we want too much too quickly, and don't have the patience to save for it?

But it's what people did... along with living with parents after they were married, not having 'mod cons' until they had saved for years, having a 'jalopy' not a new car....

I'm going to risk my neck here and coin a phrase old Norman Tebbit used...'On yer bike'. (yes I know it wasnt' exactly that.)

I worked the fields in remote locations, I don't drive, there were no buses, so how did I get there? One of two ways, on my bike, or shanks's pony, I walked.

Cars have made people lazy (though, when I think about it, cycling several miles to a remote field in the fens, therefore usually against the wind, bending over double all day, humping half-hundredweight bags of spuds or onions about, it's no wonder my hips are knackered LOL)

The quality of the veg is far superior to what you'd get for a bit less or maybe the same price in the supermarkets too !!! It hasn't been cold stored for months so the goodness is still there.

Even if I were to win the lottery tomorrow I'd still carry on buying it like I do.

I don't disagree with the premise Teresa...but supposing a bunch of British asparagus is ( no idea actually lol as I can't remember the last time I had it ) but say £1.50 and a bunch of Spanish asparagus is £1... and you are on a minimum wage yourself...which do you buy? would you buy the 'realistic' price....or the 'best' price?

many items are unrealistically priced for the production costs, keeping workers low paid here and abroad....but the demand is for 'cheap' ..... at my local shopping centre for eg the Prim**k shop is always packed...

incidentally, I used to live in March Muffy, good soil! :)

It's not daft at all Muffy. I use the local farmers market, and the local market, who sell Norfolk produce where they can, and that's the best way to do it. You get far better value for your money, and it supports the local farmer too.

I'd rather do that...and pay say, £1.20 for a reasonably sized cauliflower grown locally, than go to Sainsburys and pay £1.50 for a tiny one grown who knows where?

I much prefer to eat seasonal fruit and veg than all the imports any day.

Do you know. I live in Cambridgeshire and try as I might in the supermarkets...I can't find an East Anglian apple anywhere lolololl...the place is full of apple orchards too !!! I WOULD pay extra to support my local farmers....even though we're feeling the pinch at the mo.

I now go to auctions and road side market stalls but how daft is that !!! xx

But Rose, surely that's exactly the same situation as the supermarkets dictating the price of milk to farmer, breaking the backs of many a good dairy farm?

Prices are kept artificially low by big business, and they can do that either by dictating the cost price to those they buy from, or employing cheap labour, at a rate many british people simply couldn't live on. It's not greed on the part of the British worker, it's need. The need to earn enough to live on.

As the Piece Muffy just put in said....it is believed, or the excuse by the business owners is, if it wasnt' for immigrants accepting low wages, they couldn't stay in business.

No, they are in business because of the demand...not because of the wages they pay. They wouldn't grow asparagus if we didn't want to eat the stuff, after all.

The businesses would still be here. WE might have to pay a more realistic price for the products, but they would still be in business. It's just an excuse, for the business owners to keep prices artificially low, and for SOME people to blame the immigrants for it.
