I have a young cat who is VERY pregnant. We took her to the vets 3 weeks ago for a check-up and the vet told us she could feel 2 kittens and they would probably be born that day or the next day...whenever it was it would be very soon. We paid her the £45 for this stirling advice and brought the cat home and waited for her (no doubt) beautiful babies to be born....we're still waiting 23 days later.
Should we be worried?
Do we need to take her back to the vets?
The cat is now enormous and we can clearly see her babies moving about so they are obviously still alive, but we're getting increasingly anxious

Call the vet to check - if the vet is not available the practice nurse will probably be able to advise.

Is the cat making a "nest"? They tend to do that just before the birth ...

Does she still only have two kittens do you think.... or is there a possibility that there might be more?

The reason I ask is that sometimes, as with one of mine many years ago, the vet feels what they think is one or two... but actually there are 4 or 5 in there... my Pol was supposed to be ready to give birth to 2*any time now*.... but 4 weeks later gave birth to 5 healthy and one very large stillborn.

Does she look as though she is in distress? She might do a lot of that rolling and stretching... if you have seen it, you'll know what I mean!!

My guess is that as long as she appears healthy, no *third eyelid* showing... no signs of distress other than you would expect from a pregnant about to deliver queen.... I would be inclined to phone the vet for reassurance, pointing out the advice given to you... and then just sit tight and wait... It sounds like she was less pregnant than was thought.....

Thanks Jill and Daff :)
She keeps looking for a nest site....shes ripped to panels off the side of the bath half a dozen times to the last few weeks. We've made little beds in a variety of places for her...then we go to get her to show her where they are and one of our other cats (Harry) has always beaten us to the pass.
She spent last night shreading newspaper up on the kitchen table...no idea what thats about, but she seems perfectly healthy and happy except she just wants to be sitting on people (right up on their chests with her face pressed up against theirs) all the time.
If someone comes to the front door she's the first one there now....doing this "pick me up" thing and generally very clingy.
She's also HUGE
She's a tiny cat who is now almost as wide as she is long and she struggles o get through the cat flap....she also seems to have lost the ability to jump up onto the counter where her food is kept. Mind you today she doesn't seem very hungry which is odd since shespractically eaten us out of house and home over the last week

Lol Jan.... she is imminenet,(edit imminent, even, lol) lol..... she will be rolling provocatively, a bit like when she is on heat... it acts as a sort of relaxant, I think.... sort of pre-birth exercises, lolol.... don't know if that is true, but all the affection is a part of it.

She will want a quiet, dark place..... hence trying to get under the bath.... put down lots of newspaper in any corner that you want her to go into.... it makes fabulous bedding... oh, and don't move it for a few days after the babies are born.... it helps them and her to identify *home* in the first week or so... don't worry about kittens poo... mum clears that away when she is cleaning them. The foetal sac fluid will sterilize the area, as well... so don't worry about it not being clean... they need it like that.

And an upturned box.... one that you can easilily lift a flap of to check on babies... is also a good idea... it will feel like a *den* to her, but will need a decent sized hole cut into the side to let her in and out.

And the kittens may be born over a long period... up to 2 days, although they are normally born within a few hours....

After and during delivery she will need fresh water close by... and little tidbits such as tuna or chicken, not too heavy, but just little bits.

I do envy you... my Pol will be 19 this year..... and hers were the last kittens I was actually present during the birth of.

Sounds like she's getting ready to deliver, if nothing happens in the next 24hrs I'd be taking her to the vet. Occasionally a Caesarian delivery is needed if one kitten is 'stuck in the way of the others'.
Good luck.

Oh... and cover your beds........ Pol gave birth on son's bed...... fortunately son was away so it was all sorted by the time he got home, lol...... but I wouldn't have moved the babies... he'd have been sleeping in with his brother, lol!

There you go Daff...you're practically next door anyway....you were meant to be here.
The kittens will be BEAUTIFUL and so CUTE I can tell by the way they kick Sassy....I'm sure 3 or 4 of them would be delighted to move over the border
But I'm still hanging on to the hope of only two babies...which already have names....Sushi and Miso.....any more pop out and I'll have to push them back as I can't think of anymore Japan-esy names

Lol....very nice.....but how do you pronounce them ?
The cat is just an ordinary tabby but my daughter is really into Japanese Manga and chose to name her after a favourite character....so her babies need Japanese names too :)
