I could kill animals and birds to eat, cooking might be a bit tricky though

As long as I could take a book to help me avoid poisoning myself by eating the wrong berries and leaves I could probably just about cope.......for a couple of days anyway! lol

dont try it out to live off the river Nene, the Eastern Europeans(allegedly) have decimated the wildlife, from birds,fish, swans and deer!!

first 12 years of my life i was a poachers wife and poacher.i had my lurcher and lamp and when most were asleep i was out lamping with my collie greyound cross lurcher.
i could ferret [but i got bored]loved ratting with the terriers .even now the thought of rummaging in an old barn with a couple a terriers sounds like a good night.coursing on preswold on a saturday .then cleaning me hunter wellies ready for the next week.
sighs ...those were the days .

I could make nettle tea, and used to gather berries and windfall apples up at our local farm and make crumbles and stuff......I love vegetables and could eat them raw from the ground.......yes, I would survive.....and......lose a few pounds as well.......:0))))

I've done it to a degree many times.
I don't drive and when I lived in the Shetlands, our croft house was 5 fields and 3 miles from the nearest bus stop.
We had running water - but only cold water. No bathroom, just a bucket in a shed outside.
I used to have 'strip' washes and wash the laundry by hand. I had a 'perpetual' lamb stew on the go constantly, adding things to it every day - till eventually there was very little lamb left!
Once I ran out of stew, so gathered mussels & seaweed from the shore, and lived on that for 3 days. After that I caught fish and sneaked some of the Kale the landlady grew for her chickens!

Later on, living in very rural Essex, and working as ag labs, OH and I rescued a duck - which got depressed, so we got him a mate. She kept laying her eggs in the woods and coming back with up to 14 ducklings in tow! We had a choice - overcrowding, selling or eating! We ate - delicious they were - from garden to oven in 15 minutes!
We also grew our own veggies, and I would make jams & jellies from wild fruits - Rowan Jelly was a favourite.
We had a friend who brought us 'road kill' - okay some of it had shot in it - but that could have been an accident! LOL

I'd be lucky if I lasted 2 days. I couldn't and wouldn't kill any thing but I'm sure they wouldn't think the same about me.

and i could get hubby and son to do all the dirty work .so we get the best bits lol.

Now you talking ... warm & dry ... easy on the joints = no need for arthritis meds

well the next meet will be on a lil island in the tropics.you all gotta come.stray can eat bananas .im going for lobster .lol

Just thought about the lack of running hot water.....

Perhaps I'd better opt out of this chance to rough it.

if i had to live of the land, then i wouldnt have a chance, i couldnt kill an animal skin it and eat it lol, i could pick berrys and eat them tho lol x

I would hate every minute of it and wouldn't cope at all. I hated camping when I was a teenager. I'm just not made for roughing it.

Well I'd manage a bit better now than I would have done before a recent charity shop find.
It's amazing what you can eat from the hedgerows. If I can find a clean source for some of those 'weeds' I would certainly give them a try.

My problem would be protein.
I don't like meat much and certainly wouldn't want to eat something I'd seen wandering around.... Might have to be eggs unless Sue can master that cheese making and pass a bit over.

I could trade it for some nettle soup perhaps....?

I think I'd be ok.... once over the shock of having to do it. I think we all have experiences which suggest that if we need to survive, then survive we will.... to choose to live like that for a year as a social experiment, I think I would cave in after 24 hours, lol

But to have to do it, cos there is no other choice, then yes, I would be able to do it as long as I could whinge a bit! ;¬))

Having been born & brought up in the countryside I think I would be ok on the foraging side + milking ... can cook in ashes, build shelter (Girl Guide style) not like to kill animals/birds but if hungry enough could.

The problem would be medication for asthma & arthritis ... so think I should opt out of trying. lol
