I don't know what this country is coming to, yes we should bring back the death penalty but then we would have all the do gooders coming out of the wood work, they always do when they dont like something that would bring some of the old values back

Its a real shame that the attempt didn't work. Maybe one of the other prisoners will have better luck on another attempt. After what he's done he most certainly does not deserve to live. Any compensation money should go directly to the families of his victims certainly not to him.

What kind of world have we brought our children into when we are trying to teach them right from wrong and this sort of thing is happening

Like has been said shame the attempt didnt work!!

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 24 Mar 2010 02:43

The Government has "absolutely no intention" of paying compensation to Soham killer Ian Huntley after he was attacked in prison, Justice Secretary Jack Straw has said.
Any claim by the 36-year-old, who required hospital treatment after reportedly having his throat slashed by a fellow inmate at Frankland Prison in Co Durham, would be "robustly, vigorously resisted", Mr Straw told MPs.
The comments came after it emerged Huntley could be awarded up to £20,000 in compensation if he sues the Prison Service for negligence.
During Commons question time, Mr Straw said the Government would fight such a move.

"There has been a suggestion, by apparently this prisoner's lawyer, that he will seek compensation," Mr Straw said.
"I can say to this House as an absolute fact that would be robustly, vigorously resisted by this Government, and we have absolutely no intention of making such compensation payments."
He agreed with Tory MP Andrew Mackay (Bracknell) that a successful claim would be an example of "the compensation culture gone absolutely mad".
Earlier, it was reported Huntley's fellow inmate, 34-year-old Damien Fowkes, from Northampton, was responsible for Sunday afternoon's attack.
Fowkes's stepson Lewis told The Sun the father-of-one "did it for Holly and Jessica".
He added: "Most people will think Damien is a hero. I think he should be given a medal. The only pity is he didn't do a better job."

Susan10146857 Report 24 Mar 2010 02:55

Does anyone not think that the throat slitting ( nearly a murder/attempted murder, I might add ) is also wrong?

Ian Huntley was wrong and in my eyes, so was the person who thought it was ok to try and kill him.

To kill is wrong...no matter who does it! ( or who tries to do it )!

KempinaPartyhat

KempinaPartyhat Report 24 Mar 2010 08:34

Susan with numbers

Yes its very wrong ...but my thoughts on it are

We have taken away this mans rights so why does he have the right to even ask for compensation

And lets hope the goverment sticks to its guns on this one

Chrissie2394

Chrissie2394 Report 24 Mar 2010 14:02

Hi Susan with numbers,

Yes I too think killing is wrong, but my first thoughts when I heard he'd had his throat cut were shame they didn't do a proper job.

If it had been one of my children he'd killed, if we had the death penalty, I'm sure I could press a button where he received a lethal injection. I personally think murderers should receive the same treatment they gave their victims.

AnninGlos Report 24 Mar 2010 14:54

I hope the person who attempted to kill him will be punished. Yes, he is evil and a waste of space. However, next time that person decides to act as judge and jury if he gets away with it this time, it might not be somebody evil, just maybe misguided.

But I feel very strongly that he should not be rewarded with compensation. In my book that is the same as making money out of a crime.
I do wonder why they keep stopping him committing suicide?

KempinaPartyhat

KempinaPartyhat Report 24 Mar 2010 16:39

I guess that stopping him killing himself is part of his mental care ....he probably needs to be "looked" after therefore we "the Sane" have to "care " for him

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 24 Mar 2010 17:34

No, Kempinawooliehat, his rights have *NOT* been taken away.

Rights are something that human beings have because we are human beings. They cannot be taken away. That is what words like "inherent" and "inalienable" *mean*.

If we have good reason, we can stop someone from exercising their rights for a period. He has been stopped from exercising his right to liberty.

People who are put in prison still *have* a right to liberty -- if they didn't, they would never have to be released, even if they were only guilty of shoplifting; or they could just be chained to a wall 24/7.

Someone who is in prison is under the control of the state. If the state is going to force them to live in captivity, which in this case it has every good reason and justification for doing, the state is responsible for their safety. It is the state's job. The state signed on for that job when they put the person in prison. People in prison cannot protect themselves, and the state must protect them.

No one is any more entitled to kill, or assault, a prisoner than they are entitled to kill or assault anyone else. No prisoner is any more fair game for being killed or assaulted than anyone else is.

I continue to be disgusted at the blood lust spewed around here (and of course not just here, by any means).

If the Ian Huntleys of the world can have their rights "taken away", then SO CAN YOU and all the rest of us.

That's why we made up these things called rights, and said that everybody has them. Everybody.

KempinaPartyhat

KempinaPartyhat Report 24 Mar 2010 18:00

Well its a bloody shame his rights havent been taken away coz S^%& B%£S like that dont deserve the right to anything including life

He took away the rights of his victims so why should he have any anyway??????

so what "right" Janey did he have to kill .......................CHILDREN those who have very little right except the right to live
