My gran's folks came from Cahirciveen Rose....can't find out anything about them though. Horrific times for most of the population of Ireland.I read The Great Hunger long ago, it was heart-breaking...haunted me for ages.

I haven't got back before my gt grandfather yet Joyous, but reading that made me think, I know he had two siblings younger than himself...but I wonder if any died before he was born....odd that it hadn't occured to me really, but it is likely I think, given the usual number of children.

its heatbreaking.my family came to england because of the famine .when i went back to galway i was shocked to think they left such a beautiful place to live over here .but starvation and family seperation was.nt a good enough reason to stay.

Regarding Cahirciveen Kerry, where my gt grandfather was born 1857...

In 1845...(paraphrasing)...only a tenth of the potato crop is affected ( by blight) and that is fed to the pigs...

1846...."there are potatoes sufficient until May then it is apprehended there will then be a scarcity in that article of food"

In 1846 ...Board of guardians Cahirciveen Union (Poor law)

"That in consequence of the scarcity of provisions we are reluctantly compelled to reject the majority of applicants for admittance this day until next week"

Difficult to read some of this, literally and emotionally...

but "the great fear amongst the peasantry that they will not be able to obtain food at a reasonable price"....in "this wretched district " from a letter " pressing for the establishment of a food depot in the district."

Just reading on Ancestry,
