celebrate it and those who don't :))
whether religious or secular, songs , poems, and thoughts welcome here...and my two favourite easter songs.one of each :)
first one I used to love singing at school
"There is a green hill far away, without a city wall, where our dear Lord was crucified who died to save us all.
We may not know, we cannot tell, what pains he had to bear, but we believe it was for us he hung and suffered there.
He died that we might be forgiven, he died to make us good, that we might go at last to heaven, saved by his precious blood.
There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin, he only could unlock the gate of heaven and let us in.
O dearly, dearly has he loved! And we must love him too, and trust in his redeeming blood, and try his works to do. "
and from 'Easter parade'
"In your Easter bonnet with all the frills upon it, You'll be the grandest lady in the Easter Parade. I'll be all in clover, and when they look you over I'll be the proudest fellow in the Easter Parade. On the Avenue, Fifth Avenue, The photographers will snap us And you'll find that you're in the rotogravure. Oh, I could write a sonnet about your Easter bonnet And of the girl I'm taking to the Easter Parade.
In my Easter bonnet with all the frills upon it, I'll be the grandest lady in the Easter Parade. You'll be all in clover, and when they look me over You'll be the proudest fellow in the Easter Parade. On the Avenue, Fifth Avenue, The photographers will snap us And you'll find that you're in the rotogravure. Oh, you may write a sonnet about my Easter bonnet And of the girl you're taking to the Easter Parade."

well I am one who doesn't bother with easter anymore, just a commercialised venture like xmas is. Don't even get the hols as OH works but do get the tips !
I do remember though the childish fun we had egg hunting etc, but even that has changed over the years.
Love the songs mind Rose. we used to sing an upbeat version of the 1st.

Easter to me.... as a child watching 'Song of Bernadette' on tv almost every year ( Bernadette Soubirou who saw a vision of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes). Chocolate eggs, have to be Cadbury's lol
but really it is about faith and the renewal of life whether in the religious sense of the resurrection or just in the 'mother nature' sense :))

and a religious one... ok a bit of an unusual performance but one of the best :)

Last night I lay a-sleeping There came a dream so fair, I stood in old Jerusalem Beside the temple there. I heard the children singing, And ever as they sang, Me thought the voice of angels From heaven in answer rang.
Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing, Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King!
And then me thought my dream was changed, The streets no longer rang, Hushed were the glad Hosannas The little children sang. The sun grew dark with mystery, The morn was cold and chill, As the shadow of a cross arose Upon a lonely hill.
Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Hark! How the angels sing, Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King!
And once again the scene was changed; New earth there seemed to be; I saw the Holy City Beside the tideless sea; The light of God was on its streets, The gates were open wide, And all who would might enter, And no one was denied. No need of moon or stars by night, Or sun to shine by day; It was the new Jerusalem That would not pass away.
Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Sing for the night is o'er! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna for evermore!

O sacred head, sore wounded, defiled and put to scorn; O kingly head surrounded with mocking crown of thorn: What sorrow mars thy grandeur? Can death thy bloom deflower? O countenance whose splendour the hosts of heaven adore!
Thy beauty, long-desirèd, hath vanished from our sight; thy power is all expirèd, and quenched the light of light. Ah me! for whom thou diest, hide not so far thy grace: show me, O Love most highest, the brightness of thy face.
I pray thee, Jesus, own me, me, Shepherd good, for thine; who to thy fold hast won me, and fed with truth divine. Me guilty, me refuse not, incline thy face to me, this comfort that I lose not, on earth to comfort thee.
In thy most bitter passion my heart to share doth cry, with thee for my salvation upon the cross to die. Ah, keep my heart thus moved to stand thy cross beneath, to mourn thee, well-beloved, yet thank thee for thy death.
My days are few, O fail not, with thine immortal power, to hold me that I quail not in death's most fearful hour; that I may fight befriended, and see in my last strife to me thine arms extended upon the cross of life.

Now the green blade rises from the buried grain, Wheat that in the dark earth many years has lain; Love lives again, that with the dead has been: Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.
In the grave they laid Him, Love Whom we had slain, Thinking that He’d never wake to life again, Laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen: Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.
Up He sprang at Easter, like the risen grain, He that for three days in the grave had lain; Up from the dead my risen Lord is seen: Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.
When our hearts are saddened, grieving or in pain, By Your touch You call us back to life again; Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been: Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.

Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

Don't mind being one of the odd ones out ....
yes, I celebrate Easter and, in fact, am leaving for church in 15 mins for the Good Friday service. Was at church on Wednesday night for a very moving Holy Week service - again last night for the Maundy Thursday service - today (as above) and tomorrow night for the Holy Saturday vigil. Needless to say.....Sunday? Yes, I and many, many others will celebrate Easter Day.
I like Easter eggs too! lol
Must go......places to go, people to see, something to remember. Cx.

Back now. Very moving service. We are given nails to hold as a reminder of what happened. All ages there. A youngster read a reading based on a child's view of the proceedings at the time. Church totally bare and devoid of all decoration. Choir in fine voice but seeing them filing out silently is impressive. We all left in silence.

When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died; my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God; all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.
See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown.
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!
Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heavenly king, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!
But the pains which he endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured; Alleluia! Now above the sky he’s king, Alleluia! Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!
Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as his love; Alleluia! Praise him, all you heavenly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!
