CRIPES_A_MIGHTY Report 26 Apr 2010 05:39

Ok....hate the software used here..it sucks..but what can you do?.

Anyway...how can I stop the drop down menus appearing everytime I put my mouse over someone in my tree?..

Because it's blocks the linking arrow so I can't descend in my tree...

Its a floored feature of this software...one that really really REALLY!!!....annoys.

Plus...AGAIN!>.. changed the software without consulting the user....thats a BIG no no...

We are paying for this..stop using us as guinea pigs.

Thank you for listen

Boogie.

I have it open now and my tree doesn't have any drop down menus

CRIPES_A_MIGHTY Report 26 Apr 2010 05:56

Hi Inspector..

Mine automatically drop down eveytime I run my mouse over anyone in my tree....
The drop down menu shows the the possible record matches for that person.....but it blocks the navigation key and so I can descend in my tree..as the menu covers the nav arrow.....

Man its annoying...And I cant see anyway to stop it doing so as the software is not tuneable for the user...

CRIPES_A_MIGHTY

CRIPES_A_MIGHTY Report 26 Apr 2010 05:59

Plus the clipboard copy & paste has changed....with no prior warning to the customer..

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 26 Apr 2010 10:33

Oh, you mean the bit that shows the no of record matches. I don't think this has actually changed - it has been like that for a while.

However, isn't really a problem. as the arrows aren't for navigation, they are short cuts for adding a relative - sideways arrow for a partner, down for a child etc. The replicate the buttons marked Add Partner, Add Child Add Sibling. If you look at another members tree there are no arrows

To navigate up or down a level, left click on a name and the tree will refresh showing connected relatives.

I don't use the site C & P so can't see what has changed but there are two buttons there so presumably they work ok.

Incidentally, GR don't give prior notice of changes to the software, never have.

Elizabeth2469049 Report 26 Apr 2010 11:34

I have found the dropdown menus quite useful - even if I have searched the records myself it is possible to notice "I don't think I had the 1851 census for him" and double check, possibly finding new information about addresses, jobs, family etc.
Certainly don't find the facility in the least irritating!

AuntySherlock Report 26 Apr 2010 11:50

In my GR tree those sideways coloured arrows are not there in the full tree view, only in the immediate family view.

I spent five minutes trying to work out this wonderful idea of left clicking the name to make the tree refresh. All I was achieving was the list of file options. Until I worked out I was right clicking the names. Time for me to go to bed.

InspectorGreenPen Report 26 Apr 2010 12:00

Yes, should have mentioned - arrows are on Immediate Family View. Hope you wake up as refreshed as your tree was.

JaneyCanuck Report 26 Apr 2010 13:39

I detest the dropdown menus. I seldom look at trees, and only noticed them recently.

What they do do, if they're long enough (and if your tree is full of Hills, they're long enough) is block out the box for the person immediately under them, completely.

Drop down menus that come on when merely hovering over should *never* *stay* dropped down when the mouse has moved on.

The only similar thing I've run into is that hideously annoying National Archives acknowledgement popup that appears if you accidentally run your mouse over it when viewing images at Ancestry - as you do every time you go up to the zoom in/out links ...

Nope. No reason for the dropdown boxes *to stay dropped down* when your mouse moves on. None.

CRIPES_A_MIGHTY

CRIPES_A_MIGHTY Report 27 Apr 2010 05:35

Right on JaneyCanuck ....I agree!..someone with sence..:)

This is my point..they block details of the person below and they also cover the editing bar...
Like your trying to add a sibling or child..and "BAM!!"..the drop menu covers the edit button so you have to juggle about to be able to click it.

As it is...left clicking doesn't show who is related....not on my tree....not now....it will show a partner..if you have one...but it no longer shows the children. So i can't drop a level to the children.
I can't descend in my tree...I have to refresh and go back up.
I am find it really really annoying..
This is something that has happen recently...from a software upgrade (upgrade.?..Joke more like).

I was happy with the early tree software, but they continually change it for no reason,.AND with out asking what we would like..considering we are paying for this....and just mess it all up.

It was working ..LEAVE IT ALONE!!!! AAAAHHHHH!!!!!

Mouse over should NEVER stay open....I'd much prefer to open manually..at least give us the option to turn the mouse over off.

Who are their programmers?..sack them...!!!

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 28 Apr 2010 08:57

I haven't tried any of this recently but it is a mistake if they have something that only works in IE8 as when things don't work they invariably advise people to change to Firefox????? So now they have people with firefox and they make something only work with IE?

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 28 Apr 2010 10:32

Yes, the drop downs are badly implemented but it isn't the end of the world and it doesn't prevent me from navigating my tree.

When I am in Immediate Family View, left clicking on a name in its box will refresh the display to show any parents, partners siblings and children, connected to them, with the person you have clicked on in the centre of the display. I don't believe any of this is new, it has worked like that for some time.

Apart from Paul, is it working differently for anyone else?

Persephone

Persephone Report 28 Apr 2010 11:47

Paul

You are just going to have to put up with it. It would be nice if you moved the mouse off the person and the drop down zapped itself shut again, but it won't do this until you go to another person. I can see where if I click on your great grandfather that blocks your grandfather and stays there until you click on your grandmother or someone else. If you don't have access to the various census years that it lists you could call it blatant advertising.
There are always some things in the system that annoy one - I get sick of being told I have got a match only to find it is someone I am already in contact with, or even worse three matches of the same name and they are all people I have in my contacts.

Anyways how are you Paul - haven't spoken to you in awhile? You need anymore help with your tree?

Aunty Perse

MargarettawasMargot

MargarettawasMargot Report 28 Apr 2010 14:50

I know exactly what Paul is talking about, and it is annoying.I used to be able to move up and down on my tree, from parent to child-not any more.
If I have a family, and click on say,the father, the children disappear and all I can access are just 2 people in isolation. No amount of clicking, moving sideways or up and down will make the other family members appear.
I then have to type the name of the person in the search box, because I can't get it any other way.It is really annoying, because I never had this problem before.it is not "user-friendly" at all. It's irritating, and a waste of time.I don't know why GR make these "improvements" when the tree is working perfectly well.If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!

Elizabeth2469049

Elizabeth2469049 Report 28 Apr 2010 15:30

Am I just lucky or what? I can still navigate round the tree the same as I did before. Wherever I am I can see three generations, and as many as the screen will fit laterally of the brothers and sisters - and it is the same whether I move to their parents or children, and the same pattern if I move to a sibling and get their spouse and children over the three generations.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 28 Apr 2010 20:57

Elizabeth has explained how the tree navigation should operate - works the same for me too with with both IE8 and Firefox 3.6.

If it works for some but not others, then possibly it might just point to a problem with your PC set up, rather than the site? Which browser do you have? Have you cleared it out recently? Is your Java and Flash Player software up to date?

I try to keep up with software updates and run CCleaner daily to clear out unwanted browsing history and other unwanted files. So far this works for me.
